1. Malignant mesothelioma : an experimental study with emphasis on proteoglycans in mesothelial cell growth and differentiation
Sammanfattning : Malignant mesothelioma is a highly aggressive tumor with median survival ranging from 4 to 12 months and, despite intense therapeutical efforts, it is invariably fatal. Mesothelioma cells are unique in the sense that they possess a biphasic growth potential and can be stimulated by serum growth factors to differentiate into stable epithelial or fibrous phenotypes. 2. Exploring the Interplay of Lipids and Membrane Proteins
Sammanfattning : The interplay between lipids and membrane proteins is known to affect membrane protein topology and thus have significant effect (control) on their functions. In this PhD thesis, the influence of lipids on the membrane protein function was studied using three different membrane protein models. LÄS MER
3. Structured management, Symptoms, Health-related Quality of Life and Alcohol in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation
Sammanfattning : Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia, affecting at least 2.9 % of the Swedish population. Although AF is associated with increased risk of ischaemic stroke, there have been many reports on the underuse of oral anticoagulants (OAC) and non-adherence to guidelines in other areas as well. 4. Mechanistic studies on the role of extracellular vesicles in the tumor microenvironment
Sammanfattning : The transition from normal into malignant cells with acquired uncontrolled growth is a process where cancer cells viciously develop adaptive strategies to overcome microenvironmental and metabolic stress. Hypoxia, or deficient oxygen supply, is a common feature of the expanding tumor which alters cell metabolism and consecutively causes lowered intracellular pH. LÄS MER
5. The role of glycoproteins in glomerular pathophysiology
Sammanfattning : Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is increasing worldwide and has a prevalence of around 10%. With time patients are at risk of losing their renal function and will need dialysis or transplantation for survival. There are no specific treatments available and mechanisms behind the onset and progression of CKD are still not fully investigated. LÄS MER
