1. Studies of phosphatidylinositol 3 kinase (PI3K) signaling pathway in mammalian ovarian follicle activation and development
Sammanfattning : The intra-oocyte signaling pathways that control oocyte growth and early follicular development are largely unknown. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the regulation and functions of phosphatidylinositol 3 kinase (PI3K) pathway in the oocyte, focusing in the roles of Foxo3a, p27, and Pten (phosphatase and tensin homolog deleted on chromosome ten). 2. To catch a killer : on the mechanisms of interferon alpha induced apoptosis
Sammanfattning : A major clinical problem regarding treatment of malignant tumours is primary or secondary resistance to therapy. Anti-tumour drugs act primarily by induction of apoptosis. However, the knowledge of how various substances induce apoptosis is still incomplete, and so is the reason for the great variation in cellular sensitivity to these drugs. LÄS MER
3. Regulation of Na+,K+-ATPase activity by protein phosphatase-1 and protein kinase C : studies in infant and adult renal tissue and on vascular smooth muscle cells
Sammanfattning : Na+, K+-ATPase is short-term modulated by hormones, involving activation of signal transduction system. The present study was designed to elucidate the role of the signaling molecules PP-1, PKC and arachidonic acid (AA) metabolites in the regulation of Na+, K+-ATPase by reversible phosphorylation, the final step of the signal transduction, and to examine the ontogeny of the signaling system. 4. Kinase cascades in the regulation of glucose homeostasis
Sammanfattning : Therapeutic strategies to treat Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) aim at improving muscle insulin sensitivity by either directly modulating, or bypassing defective insulin signaling. Insulin induces metabolic and gene regulatory responses via PI 3-Kinase (PI3K) and Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase (MAPK) signaling pathways, respectively. LÄS MER
5. Targeting insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor in cancer
Sammanfattning : Cancer is a multi-step process where the accumulation of several genetic and epigenetic alterations drives the transformation of a normal cell to a malignant cell, skipping the normal control of defense, repair and apoptosis. During the selection process towards a malignant phenotype, the transforming cells make use of normal (physiological) extracellular signaling pathways to create growth advantage over normal cells.
