11. Photodynamic therapy in the head and neck
Sammanfattning : Photodynamic therapy, PDT, is a method to diagnose and treat cancer. In PDT a sensitizer is administered to the patient and this sensitizer is accumulated in tumors. If the sensitizer-containing tumor is subjected to a laser of a specific wavelength the tumor is fluorescing allowing diagnostics. LÄS MER
12. Towards Undistorted Fluorescence for Tissue Diagnostics and Therapy Monitoring
Sammanfattning : Fluorescence techniques for applications in tissue diagnostics and therapy monitoring were investigated and developed in the work presented in this thesis. The aim was to develop fluorescence diagnostics for the detection of malignant tumors and better delimitation of the tumor margins, using the enhanced contrast in fluorescence between tumor and surrounding healthy tissue. 13. Accurate description of heterogeneous tumors for biologically optimized radiation therapy
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, a model of tissue oxygenation is presented, that takes into account the heterogeneous nature of tumor vasculature. Even though the model is rather simple, the resulting oxygen distributions agree very well with clinically observed oxygen distributions for most tumors and healthy normal tissues. LÄS MER
14. Aspects of Regulation of GFR and Tubular Function in the Diabetic Kidney : Roles of Adenosine, Nitric Oxide and Oxidative Stress
Sammanfattning : Diabetic nephropathy is the main cause for initiation of renal replacement therapy and early symptoms in patients include increased glomerular filtration rate (GFR), decreased oxygen tension and albuminuria, followed by a progressive decline in GFR and loss of kidney function. Experimental models of diabetes display increased GFR, decreased tissue oxygenation and nitric oxide bioavailability. LÄS MER
15. Studies on Retinal Circulation in Experimental Animals, Healthy Human Eyes and Eyes with Diabetic Retinopathy
Sammanfattning : The retina is a highly metabolically active tissue with large demands on the supply of nutrients. Disorders affecting the retina often include some vasculopathy with an impact on retinal circulation. LÄS MER
