  2. 12. The human diving response : effects of temperature and training

    Författare :Erika Schagatay; Lunds universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Djurfysiologi; pig; human; training; breath-holding time; breaking point; cold-receptors; arterial blood; vasoconstriction; bradycardia; diving reflex; diving response; Breath-hold diving; Animal physiology; simulated diving; Organism biology; Organismbiologi; Sports; Idrott; Physiology; Fysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : The aim was to elucidate the cardiovascular response associated with breath-hold diving, especially the effects of temperature in its elicitation and the effects of different types of training on the human diving response (DR) and breath-holding time (BHT), and to evaluate the human DR in a mammalian perspective. A model for simulated diving by apnea and facial immersion in cold water was developed. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Surviving the ratchet : Modelling deleterious mutations in asexual populations

    Författare :Jonas Söderberg; Otto Berg; Laurence Loewe; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Theoretical biology; Population genetics; Stochastic modelling; Genome evolution; Muller s Ratchet; Genetics; Genetik; Organism biology; Organismbiologi; Biology; Biologi; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär evolution; Biology with specialization in Molecular Evolution;

    Sammanfattning : One of the most unforgiving processes in nature is that of Muller's ratchet, a seemingly irreversible accumulation of deleterious mutations that all organisms have to deal with or face extinction. The most obvious way to avoid fitness collapse is recombination, though asexual populations usually do not have the luxury of recombining freely. LÄS MER

  4. 14. Botanical Repellents and Pesticides Traditionally Used Against Haematophagous Invertebrates in Lao PDR

    Författare :Chanda Vongsombath; Thomas Jaenson; Raimondas Mozuraitis; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ethnobotany; fly larvae; Lao PDR; medical entomology; mosquito repellents; myiasis; plant-based insecticides; terrestrial leeches; Haemadipsidae; Systematics and phylogenetics; Systematik och fylogeni; Organism biology; Organismbiologi; Biologi med inriktning mot systematik; Biology with specialization in Systematics;

    Sammanfattning : Haematophagous parasites and disease vectors such as leeches, ticks, mites, lice, bed bugs, mosquitoes, and myiasis-causing fly larvae are common health problems in Lao Peoples Democratic Republic (Lao PDR). A main aim of my field work in Lao PDR in 2006-2010 was to document traditional knowledge among different ethnic groups about plants that people use to repel or to kill blood-feeding invertebrates. 5. 15. Translational research of the quaking gene : Focusing on the conjunction between development and disease

    Författare :Bryn Farnsworth; Lina Emilsson; Roman Chrast; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; QKI; glia; oligodendrocyte; Alzheimer s; schizophrenia; zebrafish; statistics; morpholino; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär organismbiologi; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Organismal Biology;

    Sammanfattning : Quaking (QKI) is an RNA binding protein involved in the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. Originally identified as the cause of hypomyelination in a mouse mutant, it has since been consistently implicated in a wide range of neurological diseases. LÄS MER
