  1. 1. The Nitrogen Cycle in Soil - Climate Impact and Methodological Challenges in Natural Ecosystems

    Författare :Anna-Karin Björsne; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nitrogen cycle; 15N tracing experiments; gross N transformation rates; climate change; climate treatments; mineralization; nitrification; forest fertilization; nitrous oxide emissions; boreal forest soil; tree species; soil organic matter; C:N ratio;

    Sammanfattning : Nitrogen (N) is a fundamental element for life, and limiting in many terrestrial ecosystems. In non-N-fertilized ecosystems, the N inputs can be low, and the nutrient availability for plants is determined by the internal cycling of N. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Permafrost carbon in a changing Arctic : On periglacial landscape dynamics, organic matter characteristics, and the stability of a globally significant carbon pool

    Författare :Niels Weiss; Peter Kuhry; Duane Froese; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Permafrost; Carbon; Climate; Arctic; Soil; Organic Matter; Cryosphere; Geomorphology; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Sammanfattning : Organic matter (OM) in arctic permafrost ground contains about twice as much carbon (C) as is currently present in the atmosphere. Climate change is particularly strong in the Arctic, and could cause a considerable part of the OM in permafrost to thaw out, decompose, and be released as greenhouse gases; further enhancing global warming. 3. 3. Anoxic degradation of organic matter in lakes : implications for carbon cycling and aquatic food webs

    Författare :David Bastviken; Joseph M Gasol; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Ekonsystem i vatten; INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH AREAS; TVÄRVETENSKAPLIGA FORSKNINGSOMRÅDEN;

    Sammanfattning : Considerable evidence from laboratory studies and marine environments suggests that degradation of organic matter (OM) is restricted under anoxic conditions compared to when molecular oxygen (O2) is present. However, other studies contradict this view since they found similar OM degradation rates and bacterial growth rates under both oxic and anoxic conditions in aquatic environments. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Priming of carbon and nitrogen mineralization in forest soils

    Författare :Saeed Alaei; MEMEG; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Soil organic matter; C:N imbalance; root exudates; priming; Extracellular enzymes; Soil organic matter; C:N imbalance; root exudates; priming; Extracellular enzymes;

    Sammanfattning : Decomposition of soil organic matter (SOM) contributes significantly to the global carbon (C) cycle and climate feedbacks. SOM decomposition depends on soil microbial activities, and these activities are driven by the availability of C and other nutrients. LÄS MER

  5. 5. The importance of biodiversity for ecosystem processes in sediments : experimental examples from the Baltic Sea

    Författare :Johan Näslund; Jonas Gunnarsson; Sara Sjöling; Nils Kautsky; Antoine Grémare; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biodiversity; Soft-bottom sediment; Ecosystem processes; Ecosystem function; Benthic-pelagic coupling; Baltic Sea; Trophic interactions; Pollutant biodegradation; Organic matter mineralization; Deposit feeder; Detritivore; Invasive species; Marine ecology; Marin ekologi; marin ekotoxikologi; Marine Ecotoxicology;

    Sammanfattning : Aquatic sediments are, by surface, the largest habitat on Earth. A wide diversity of organisms inhabit these sediments and by their actions they have a large influence on and also mediate many ecosystem processes. LÄS MER
