1. Integrated Agriculture and Aquaculture Systems (IAA) for Enhanced Food Production and Income Diversification in Tanzania
Sammanfattning : Aquaculture production in Tanzania has increased in recent years, responding to an increased demand for fish, partly because of an increasing population and declining catches of wild fish. However, the current aquaculture production is still low, dominated by small scale farming systems, that are struggling with a number of challenges such as lack of improved fish breeds, feeds, technical skills and low adoption rates. 2. Evaluation of locally available feed resources for Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in Rwanda
Sammanfattning : Aquaculture was introduced in Rwanda in the 1940s as an extensive pond-based system but the sector has gained in popularity during the past two decades, resulting in greater numbers of fish ponds and a corresponding increase in demand for quality fish feeds for sustainable aquaculture production. The aim of this thesis was to identify, sample and evaluate the nutritive value of some locally available feed ingredients that could be used by fish farmers producing Nile tilapia. LÄS MER
3. Brewer’s yeast as a protein source in the diet of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and freshwater prawns (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) reared in a clear water or biofloc environment
Sammanfattning : This thesis investigated the effects of dietary protein replacement of fishmeal or soybean meal with spent brewer’s yeast (SBY) in farmed tilapia and giant freshwater prawns. The effect of rearing tilapia and prawn in two different rearing systems, clear water recirculating aquaculture system (CW-RAS) and biofloc recirculating aquaculture system (Bio-RAS), were also investigated. 4. Occurrence and ecotoxicity of endocrine disruptor chemicals in aquatic environment and sewage treatment systems
Sammanfattning : The applicability of one selected method for indirect measurement of vitellogenin (Vtg) in fish plasma based on the quantification of alkali-labile phosphates (ALP method) to assess estrogenicity in water was investigated. The ALP method applied in this investigation was originally developed with Carassius carassius (Crucian carps). LÄS MER
5. Towards a sustainable tilapia breeding program in Tanzania
Sammanfattning : A structured breeding program is an important step towards sustainable tilapia aquaculture in Tanzania. The aim of the thesis was to generate baseline information for the establishment of tilapia breeding program in Tanzania. LÄS MER
