1. Molecular mechanisms of embryonic stem cell pluripotency: transcription, telomere maintenance and proliferation
Sammanfattning : Somatic cell nuclear transfer and generation of induced pluripotent stem cells provide potential routes towards generation of patient specific embryonic stem (ES) cells. These procedures require induction of Oct4 gene expression, high telomerase activity and specific cell proliferation, characteristics shared with cancer stem cells. LÄS MER
2. Identification of stem cell factors - Novel protein-protein interactions and their functions
Sammanfattning : Embryonic stem (ES) cells provide an unlimited source of cells potentially useful for regenerative medicine, however, prior to clinical implementation, additional basic research is needed. This thesis is focused upon different molecular aspects regarding ES cells, primarily by finding novel stem cell protein-protein interactions and their functions. LÄS MER
3. Manipulating neural stem cells
Sammanfattning : The stem cell field is a fairly young but fast growing scientific field. Our understanding of stem cells has changed tremendously over the last couple of decades. This in mainly due to the development of new techniques that has enabled us to study stem cells from a completely new perspective. LÄS MER
4. Dissecting gene expression regulation in mouse embryonic stems
Sammanfattning : Every cell within an organism is derived from a single fertilized egg that undergoes cellular differentiation and development to generate mature specialized cells. Mouse embryonic stem cells (ESCs) derived from the inner cell mass (ICM) of the pre-implantation blastocyst have proven to be a model to study gene expression during differentiation and development. 5. The impact of signaling factors on intervertebral disc degeneration and regeneration - studies on disc and mesenchymal stem cells from chronic low back pain patients
Sammanfattning : INTRODUCTION: Chronic low back pain (LBP) is associated with degeneration of the intervertebral discs (IVDs). Increased expressions of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in degenerated IVDs lead to loss of proteoglycan and extracellular matrix (ECM) which affect the viability of the disc cells (DCs).
