    Sammanfattning : In the thesis are analyzed the combined effects of maternal characteristics and cigarettesmoking in pregnancy on foetal growth; and potential interactions with maternalanthropometry, haemoglobin levels in the three trimesters and maternal glucose metabolismin late pregnancy. Foetal growth was assessed through serial ultrasound measurementsfrom second trimester until term and by neonatal anthropometry. LÄS MER

    Sammanfattning : The appropriateness of universal screening for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) has been strongly questioned, since it does not satisfy ethical principles for screening. The aims of these studies were to determine the prevalence of GDM, expressed in terms of impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and diabetes mellitus (DM), to evaluate different screening models using traditional anamnestic risk factors and repeated random B-glucose, to determine whether GDM increases risks for maternal complications such as preeclampsia, and to determine whether IGT during pregnancy, if left untreated, is associated with increased maternal or neonatal morbidity.     Sammanfattning : The studies described in this thesis were carried out in Sudan and Sweden. Pregnant Sudanese women, who had a significantly lower urinary iodine concentration than their Swedish counterparts, showed significantly lower thyrotrophin (TSH) levels in weeks 36-39 of pregnancy and higher free thyroxine (FT4) levels both in weeks 20-24 and 36-39 of pregnancy than Swedish pregnant women.
