  1. 1. Water in and on ionic materials : Structure, energetics, and vibrations

    Författare :Getachew Kebede; Kersti Hermansson; Marie-Pierre Gaigeot; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; DFT; dispersion interactions; OH stretching frequency; electric field; dipole moment; Hydrogen bond; ionic surfaces; ionic hydrates;

    Sammanfattning : Many chemical and physical phenomena in nature, in industrial processes, and in our daily lives take place at water/solid interfaces. The aim of this thesis is to further our knowledge of such processes at a molecular level. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Vibrational Sum Frequency and Infrared Reflection/Absorption Spectroscopy Studies of the Air/Liquid and Liquid/Metal Interfaces

    Författare :Magnus Johnson; Christofer Leygraf; Andrew Gewirth; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Corrosion science; laser spectroscopy; nonlinear optics; Materials science; Teknisk materialvetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : Atmospheric corrosion, the most common form of metal corrosion, occurs within the interfacial region between a solid, and the surrounding atmosphere. In fact three phases and two interfaces are involved: the gas, a thin liquid layer, a solid, the gas/liquid and the liquid/solid interfaces. LÄS MER

  3. 3. A Spectroscopic Study of Interfacial Films: Internal Structuring, Stability, and Hydration

    Författare :Jonathan F. D. Liljeblad; Mark W. Rutland; C. Magnus Johnson; Rob Walker; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Monolayers of molecules are capable of completely changing the nature of surfaces and their interactions with the surroundings despite their almost negligible thickness. In the research presented in this doctoral thesis the surface specific technique Vibrational Sum Frequency Spectroscopy (VSFS) was combined with the Langmuir trough to investigate various manifestations of monolayers, such as biomimetic membranes, mono methyl branched long chain fatty acids in contact with air, and hydrophobic silane monolayers in contact with water.
