  1. 1. Energization and Acceleration of Dayside Polar Outflowing Oxygen

    Författare :Sachiko Arvelius; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Solar wind-magnetosphere interactions; Magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling; O energization acceleration; O outflow; Space physics; Rymdfysik;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with energetic oxygen ions (i.e. single-charged atomic oxygen ions, O+) at altitudes higher than 5 Earth radii (RE) and at latitudes above 75 (toward 90) degrees invariant latitude (deg ILAT) in the dayside polar magnetosphere observed by Cluster. LÄS MER

  2. 2. O+ heating, outflow and escape in the high altitude cusp and mantle

    Författare :Rikard Slapak; Andrew Yau; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Rymdteknik; Space Technology;

    Sammanfattning : The Earth and its atmosphere are embedded in the magnetosphere, a region in space dominated by the geomagnetic field, shielding our planet as it acts to deflect the energetic solar wind. Even though the atmosphere is protected from direct interaction with the solar wind it is indirectly affected by significant magnetosphere-solar wind interaction processes, causing constituents of the upper atmosphere to flow up into the magnetosphere. 3. 3. High altitude ion heating observed by the Cluster spacecraft

    Författare :Martin Waara; Hans Nilsson; Kristina Lynch; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Space physics; Rymdfysik; rymd- och plasmafysik; Space and Plasma Physics;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with heating of outowing oxygen ions at high altitude above the polar cap using data from the Cluster spacecraft. oInospheric plasma may flow up from the ionosphere but at velocities which are low enough that the ions are still gravitationally bound. For the ions to overcome gravity, further acceleration is needed. LÄS MER
