  1. 1. The psycho-metabolic consequences of sleep loss in people

    Författare :Lieve T. van Egmond; Christian Benedict; Veronica Witte; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Sleep; nutrition; metabolism; sleep deprivation; sex differences; weight differences; obesity; cognition; mediterranean diet; brain health; social evaluation; night work; occupational performance; emotion; vigilance; energy balance; diet; elderly; Fysiologi; Physiology; Nutrition; Nutrition; Neurology; Neurologi; Psychiatry; Psykiatri; Geriatrics; Geriatrik; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Sammanfattning : Night work is vital for maintaining our 24/7 society; however, in the long run, it may have adverse health consequences like obesity and Alzheimer’s disease. By performing one of the most extensive experimental in-laboratory studies to date, I sought to investigate how sleep deprivation impacts important features like how a person responds to others and how well a person can sustain attention and wakefulness during simulated night work. 2. 2. Exercising on the edge: mitochondrial and metabolic responses to intense training

    Författare :Mikael Flockhart; Filip J Larsen; Eva Blomstrand; Nikolai Baastrup Nordsborg; Gymnastik- och idrottshögskolan; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Exercise; training; mitochondria; performance; glucose tolerance; proteins; oxygen uptake; metabolism; cycling; Medicin Teknik; Medicine Technology;

    Sammanfattning : Exercise and exercise training induces several physiological adaptations that increase the oxidative capacity of the muscles and improve glucose regulation. While the positive metabolic adaptations and effects on glucose regulation after exercise and exercise training have been extensively studied, negative outcomes have not. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Nutrition in Elderly Patients Undergoing Cardiac Surgery

    Författare :Doris Rapp-Kesek; Torbjörn Karlsson; Folke Hammarqvist; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Anaesthesiology and intensive care; elderly; nutrition; CABG; cardiac surgery; outcome; insulin resistance; enteral nutrition; splanchnic blood flow; BMI; albumin; 3-methylhistidine; alfa-1-antitrypsin; Anestesiologi och intensivvård;

    Sammanfattning : Many elderly undergo cardiac surgery. The prevalence of malnutrition in elderly is high and increases with comorbidity. This thesis aims to clarify some aspects on performing surgery in elderly concerning nutritional status, nutritional treatment and age-related physiology. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Intestinal Bypass and Total Parenteral Nutrition: Changes in Gut Function and Morphology

    Författare :Mikael Ekelund; Lund Kirurgi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; traumatology; Kirurgi; ortopedi; traumatologi; orthopaedics; Surgery; Gastroenterologi; Gastro-enterology; Fysiologi; Physiology; total parenteral nutrition; supersensitivity; plasticity; intestinal bypass; interstitial cells of Cajal; goblet cells; eosinophils; adaptation; enteric nervous system;

    Sammanfattning : Abolition of enteral nutrition is sometimes required in severe illness. The primary aim of the present work has been to elucidate possible changes in intestinal morphology and motor function in absence of enteral nutrition. Total absence of enteral nutrition in an isolated intestinal segment was created by bypassing the distal ileum in a rat model. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Understanding the urban ecosystem : interactions between plants, animals, and people

    Författare :Johan Kjellberg Jensen; Evolutionär ekologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; air pollution; avian physiology; fatty acids; human-nature interactions; nature connection; non-native plants; nutrition; trophic interactions; urban ecology; urbanization; air pollution; avian physiology; fatty acids; human-nature interactions; nature connection; non-native plants; nutrition; trophic interactions; urban ecology; urbanization;

    Sammanfattning : Cities are the pinnacle of human change to the environment, creating unique types of ecosystems which present many challenges to local organisms: habitat fragmentation, introduced species, and various pollutants. Being crucibles of anthropogenic effects, urban ecosystems offer opportunities to understand how humans impact nature. LÄS MER
