1. The Eemian Interglacial at Sokli, northern Finland : A multi-proxy environmental and climatic reconstruction based on a 9 m long lacustrine sediment sequence
Sammanfattning : Understanding the fundamentals of the Earth’s climate system during the Quaternary Period (the past ca 2.6 million years) is of imminent interest in light of the reported recent climatic changes. LÄS MER
2. Wintertime compound extremes in Europe and North America : from dynamics to predictability
Sammanfattning : This thesis examines the co-occurrence of wintertime low temperature extremes (cold spells) over North America and wet or windy extremes over Europe. Prolonged (≅ 5 days) North American cold spells can be associated with both upstream and downstream anomalous large-scale atmospheric flows, the latter modulating extreme weather occurrences over Europe. 3. Air Pollution Dependency on Climate Variability and Source Region : Past, Current and Future Air Pollution Scenarios over Europe
Sammanfattning : The main objectives of this thesis were to investigate the dependency of European air pollution on climate variability and emission source region. Calculations with a chemistry transport model (CTM) were conducted to investigate the influence of climate variability. LÄS MER
4. Diversity and phylogeography in Alisma (Alismataceae), with emphasis on Northern European taxa
Sammanfattning : In the present thesis the phylogeny and patterns of genetic diversity of the plant genus Alisma (Alismataceae) were investigated by means of genetic markers (RAPDs, allozymes, and ITS and trnL sequences). Additionally, morphological studies were carried out in paper IV. LÄS MER
5. Simulating the palaeorecord of northern European lakes using a coupled lake-catchment model
Sammanfattning : A coupled lake-catchment model was developed to examine the controls on lake-level changes in currently overflowing lakes during Holocene. The lake energy-balance is simulated as the one-dimensional vertical heat transfer by eddy diffusion and convective mixing. LÄS MER
