11. Towards the compilation of a new Digital Bathymetric Model of the North Atlantic Ocean
Sammanfattning : Topography on land and bathymetry, its underwater depth equivalent, belong to the most fundamental attributes of the solid earth's surface. Over two thirds of the earth is covered by water, with about 90% of this area lying more than 1000m below the sea surface. LÄS MER
12. Causal links of past climate change in Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 climate models
Sammanfattning : The climate system is influenced by various external forcings (e.g. volcanic forcing, solar forcing and change of greenhouse gas concentrations) and its own internal climate variability. LÄS MER
13. Significance of N2 fixing planktonic symbioses for open ocean ecosystems
Sammanfattning : Di-nitrogen (N2) fixers, also called diazotrophs, are able to reduce atmospheric N2 into bioavailable nitrogen, giving them an advantage in open ocean regions with low dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentrations. The focus of this thesis are three lineages of symbiotic heterocystous filamentous types (het-1, het-2 and het-3), that associate with several genera of microalgae called diatoms (collectively referred to as Diatom Diazotroph Associations, DDAs). 14. Monitoring persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in sub-Arctic and Arctic marine mammals, 1984 - 2009
Sammanfattning : The Arctic has become an important indicator region for assessing persistence and bioaccumulation properties of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). This thesis is aimed at evaluating the occurrence of persistent halogenated POPs in seven species of sub-Arctic and Arctic marine mammals over a 25-year period. LÄS MER
15. Unraveling the thermohaline structure of the Southern Ocean using functional data analysis
Sammanfattning : The Southern Ocean connects the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans and provides a direct pathway to exchange mass, heat and salt across the Global Ocean, therefore playing an important role in the global climate system. Due to the complexity of its structure and the general inadequacy of its sampling, both in time and space, it remains a challenge to describe and visualize the three dimensional pattern of its circulation and the associated tracer distribution (temperature, salinity, oxygen or nutrients).
