  1. 1. Functional genomics of the Baltic Sea cyanobacterium Nodularia spumigena in relation to nitrogen fixation, heterocyst differentiation and toxin production

    Författare :Simina Vintila; Rehab El-Shehawy; Peter Lindblad; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cyanobacteria; Nodularia; nitrogen fixation; heterocyst; nitrogenase; ammonium; phosphate; nodularin; Baltic Sea; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology; växtfysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Nodularia spumigena is a filamentous, heterocystous cyanobacterium that dominates the annual, toxic cyanobacterial blooms in the Baltic Sea. The blooms are believed to have increased in recent years, due to eutrophication by phosphate and/or nitrogen. Toxicity of these blooms is well-documented and attributed to the hepatotoxin nodularin. 2. 2. Filamentous cyanobacteria in the Baltic Sea - spatiotemporal patterns and nitrogen fixation

    Författare :Lisa Almesjö; Ragnar Elmgren; Norbert Wasmund; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Aphanizomenon sp.; Nodularia spumigena; Baltic Sea; image analysis; spatial variability; nitrogen fixation; vertical migration; marin ekologi; Marine Ecology;

    Sammanfattning : Summer blooms of filamentous, diazotrophic cyanobacteria are typical of the Baltic Sea Proper, and are dominated by Aphanizomenon sp. and the toxic Nodularia spumigena. Although occurring every summer, the blooms vary greatly in timing and spatial distribution, making monitoring difficult and imprecise. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Baltic Sea phytoplankton in a changing environment

    Författare :Mireia Bertos-Fortis; Catherine Legrand; Ilana Berman-Frank; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; phytoplankton ecology; cyanobacteria; dynamics; environmental factors; successional patterns; interactions; life strategies; non-ribosomal peptides; diversity; nodularin; N. spumigena; Akvatisk ekologi; Aquatic Ecology;

    Sammanfattning : Future climate scenarios in the Baltic Sea project increasing sea surface temperature, as well as increasing precipitation and river runoff resulting in decreased salinity. These changes can severely impact the dynamics and function of brackish water communities, specifically phytoplankton. LÄS MER

  4. 4. On the ecophysiology of Baltic cyanobacteria focusing on bottom-up factors

    Författare :Malin Mohlin; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Allelopathy; Aphanizomenon sp.; Baltic Sea; Cyanobacteria; Diazotrophic; Multi-factorial; Nitrogen; Nodularin; photosynthetic active radiation; Phosphorus; ultraviolet radiation; UV-A; UV-B;

    Sammanfattning : Cyanobacterial blooms in the Baltic Sea are dominated by diazotrophic cyanobacteria, i.e. Aphanizomenon sp. and Nodularia spumigena. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Monitoring the cellular phosphate status in bloom-forming cyanobacteria of the Baltic Sea

    Författare :Sara Jonasson; Erik Söderbäck; Hans C. P. Matthjis; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cyanobacteria; Baltic Sea; phosphorus; cyanotoxin; nodularin; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : In the Baltic Sea dense cyanobacterial blooms occur regularly during late summer. Since the dominant bloom-forming cyanobacteria, Nodularia spp. and Apanizomenon spp. are capable of fixing atmospheric dinitrogen, the macronutrient predominantly limiting their growth is phosphorus.
