16. On Surgery for Lumbar Spinal Stenosis
Sammanfattning : The incidence of lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is steadily rising, mostly because of a noticeably older age structure. In Sweden, LSS surgery has increased continuously over the years and is presently the most common argument to undergo spine surgery. The purpose of the surgery is to decompress the neural elements in the stenotic spinal canal. LÄS MER
17. Plasticity and Inflammation following Traumatic Brain Injury
Sammanfattning : Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) mainly affects young persons in traffic accidents and the elderly in fall accidents. Improvements in the clinical management have significantly improved the outcome following TBI but survivors still suffer from depression, memory problems, personality changes, epilepsy and fatigue. 18. Thermocoagulation in Deep Brain Structures : Modelling, simulation and experimental study of radio-frequency lesioning
Sammanfattning : Radio-frequency (RF) lesioning is a method utilising high frequency currents for thermal coagulation of pathological tissue or signal pathways. The current is delivered from an electrode with a temperature sensor, permitting control of the current at a desired target temperature. In the brain RF-lesioning can e.g. LÄS MER
19. Pressure autoregulation of cerebral blood flow in traumatic brain injury and aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage
Sammanfattning : The ability of the brain to keep a stable and adequate cerebral blood flow (CBF) independently of fluctuations in systemic blood pressure is referred to as cerebral pressure autoregulation (CPA). When the brain is injured by trauma or hemorrhage, this ability may be impaired, leaving the brain vulnerable to events of high or low blood pressure. LÄS MER
20. Energy Balance out of Balance after Severe Traumatic Brain Injury
Sammanfattning : The overall aim of the research presented here was to expand the knowledge on metabolic course and nutritional outcome in patients with severe traumatic brain injury and to analyze the use and accuracy of different methods of assessment. Study I, a systematic review of 30 articles demonstrated consistent data on increased metabolic rate, of catabolism and of upper gastrointestinal intolerance in the majority of the patients during early post injury period.
