  1. 31. Death mechanisms compromising hippocampal neurogenesis after status epilepticus

    Författare :Christine Ekdahl Clementson; Lund Neurologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; minocycline; lipopolysaccharide; microglia activation; status epilepticus; epilepsy; cysteinyl aspartate-specific proteases; apoptosis; neurogenesis; progenitor cell progeny;

    Sammanfattning : Status epilepticus (SE) leads to neurodegeneration as well as neurogenesis in the adult rat hippocampus. This thesis demonstrates that even if the neurogenic response initially is very pronounced, with a several-fold increase in cell proliferation, the survival of the newly formed neurons is compromised by a death mechanism involving mitochondria-related caspases. 2. 32. Stroke epidemiology in Southern Sweden. Trends in incidence and survival across two decades with projections into the future

    Författare :Björn Hallström; Lund Neurologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; hospitalization; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; trends; survival; incidence; stroke; epidemiology;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Stroke is a major cause of death and disability. Investigations of the epidemiological trends for stroke might result in better understanding of stroke pathogenesis and prevention. LÄS MER

  3. 33. Synaptic Integration of Hippocampal Neurons Generated in the Adult Brain: Influence of a Pathological Environment

    Författare :Katherine Jakubs; Lund Neurologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; Neurologi; synaptic plasticity; GABA; glutamate; GFP; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; hippocampus; dentate gyrus; neurogenesis; LPS; inflammation; epilepsy; SE; patch-clamp;

    Sammanfattning : The adult brain constantly produces new neurons from endogenous neural progenitor cells located in at least two regions, the subgranular zone (SGZ) in dentate gyrus of the hippocampus, and the subventricular zone (SVZ). Major efforts are underway to discover the functional significance of new neurons in the adult brain. LÄS MER

  4. 34. Role of Neuropeptides and Neurotrophic Factors in Seizure Modulation

    Författare :Avtandil Nanobashvili; Lund Neurologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; brain slice; entorhinal cortex; hippocampus; galanin; glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor; neuropeptide Y; epilepsy; kindling; Neurology; neurofysiologi; neuropsykologi; Neurologi;

    Sammanfattning : The presented thesis explores role of glial cell line derived neurotrophic factor family receptor a2 (GFRa2), as well as neuropeptide Y (NPY) and galanin and their receptors in modulation of seizure activity. We demonstrate that mice lacking the GFRa2 gene (GFRa2-/-) exhibit suppressed seizure generalization in traditional and rapid kindling models. LÄS MER

  5. 35. Stroke and Functional Recovery - An experimental study on environmental influence and gene expression after cortical infarcts in the rat

    Författare :Anette Risedal; Lund Neurologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurology; neuropsychology; cortical infarct; rat; enriched environment; functional recovery; brain-derived neurotrophic factor; inducible transcription factors; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; Neurologi; glucocorticoids; neurophysiology;

    Sammanfattning : Abstract Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the western world, and the number one cause of disability. 85% of all strokes are ischemic. Most stroke survivors will experience recovery of function. The mechanisms behind this improvement are partly unknown, but may involve elements of both compensation and restoration. LÄS MER
