16. Anabolic Androgenic Steroids : Effects on Neuropeptide Systems in the Rat Brain
Sammanfattning : Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) have been used in clinics for decades. The misuse of AAS has previously been attributed merely to sport athletes, taking AAS with intentions to increase muscle mass, enhance physical performance and to improve results in competitions. LÄS MER
17. The role of substance P in respiratory control in the newborn : effects of morphine and nicotine
Sammanfattning : We breathe in order to maintain oxygen, carbon dioxide and pH levels within the physiological range in response to the metabolic demands of the body. To achieve this, the respiratory control system is dependent on input from peripheral and/ central chemosensitive areas and on participation of different neuromodulator systems. LÄS MER
18. Respiratory control in the newborn : central chemosensitivity, neuropeptides and nicotinic effects
Sammanfattning : Breathing is regulated by a complex network of neurons located mainly in the brainstem. For the newborn, it is critical for survival that a continuous respiration is established after birth. However, the regulation of respiration also undergoes maturation in the postnatal period. 19. Functional Aspects of Peripheral and Spinal Cord Neurons Involved in Itch and Pain
Sammanfattning : We have investigated the role of the metabotropic glutamate receptor 7 (mGluR7) and the gastrin releasing peptide receptor (Grpr) population that are involved at different levels of itch transmission. We found that mGuR7 deficient mice displayed an anaphylaxis-like behavior when provoked with histamine. LÄS MER
20. 11C Molecular Imaging in Focal Epilepsy
Sammanfattning : Epilepsy is a common neurological disease affecting 6 million people in Europe. Early prevention and accurate diagnosis and treatment are of importance to obtain seizure freedom. In this thesis new applications of carbon-11-labelled tracers in PET and autoradiographic studies were explored in focal epilepsy. LÄS MER
