1. Sutures bridging nerve defects
Sammanfattning : A new and simple method for the repair of nerve defects, in which sutures alone are used to guide regeneration between the nerve endings, was developed. Bilateral seven to 17 mm rat sciatic nerve defects were bridged by continuous longitudinal sutures with or without different modifications, by conventional autologous nerve grafts or direct repair under tension as controls. 2. Development of biosynthetic conduits for peripheral nerve repair
Sammanfattning : Peripheral nerve injuries are often associated with significant loss of nervous tissue leading to poor restoration of function following repair of injured nerves. Although the injury gap could be bridged by autologous nerve graft, the limited access to donor material and additional morbidity such as loss of sensation and scarring have prompted a search for biosynthetic nerve transplants. 3. Cell activation and nerve regeneration following peripheral nerve injury
Sammanfattning : The effect of short time vibration exposure and tourniquet compression on nerve regeneration in rats was studied with special reference to cell activation. One of the hindlimbs was conditioned by either vibration exposure (5 hours / day - 5 consecutive days) or compression (150-300 mmHg for 30-120 minutes), which was followed by a recovery period of 0-7 days. 4. Nerve gap repair by the use of artificial conduits and cultured cells
Sammanfattning : Peripheral nerve injuries are often associated with loss of nerve tissue and require autologous nerve grafts to provide a physical substrate for axonal growth. This thesis investigates the use of fibrin as both a tubular conduit to guide nerve regeneration and also as a matrix material to suspend various regenerative cell types within/on poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) nerve conduits. 5. Repair and Reconstruction of Peripheral Nerve Injuries. Treatment with G-CSF and Stromal Vascular Fraction
Sammanfattning : While surgery is a cornerstone in treatment of peripheral nerve injuries, it is not a comprehensive approach, and outcome is unsatisfactory, especially sensory function. The present aim was to translate recent findings about stem- and progenitor cells to improve regenerative outcome, where the cells have to be autologous, available within the same surgical procedure, and minimally manipulated.
