21. Infrared spectroscopy as a tool to reconstruct past lake-ecosystem changes : Method development and application in lake-sediment studies
Sammanfattning : Natural archives such as lake sediments allow us to assess contemporary ecosystem responses to climate and environmental changes in a long-term context beyond the few decades to at most few centuries covered by monitoring or historical data. To achieve a comprehensive view of the changes preserved in sediment records, multi-proxy studies – ideally in high resolution – are necessary. LÄS MER
22. Characterisation of mammalian cell culture processes with NIR spectroscopy
Sammanfattning : The importance of recombinant proteins produced by mammaliancell culture has increased dramatically due to the discoveriesin the field of recombinant biotechnology. Therefore, optimising and gaining process knowledge about cell culture hasalso gained in interest. LÄS MER
23. Applications of visible and near infrared spectroscopy for sorting and identification of tree seeds
Sammanfattning : Seeds are the most commonly used regeneration material for reforestation purpose; hence interest in “precision sowing” among nurseries is high due to the high cost of containerized seedling production. In addition, the increased interest in growing hybrid larch in commercial forestry has raised concerns about the purity of hybrid larch seed lots, as there are large proportions of pure parental seeds mixed with hybrid larch seed lots. 24. Brain functional near infrared spectroscopy in human infants : cerebral cortical haemodynamics coupled to neuronal activation in response to sensory stimulation
Sammanfattning : The assessment of cortical activation in the neonatal brain is crucial in the study of brain development, as it provides precious information for how the newborn infant processes external or internal stimuli. Thus far functional studies of neonates aimed to assess cortical responses to certain external stimuli are very few, due to the lack of suitable techniques to monitor brain activity of the newborn. 25. Excited States of Carotenoids and Their Functions in Light Harvesting
Sammanfattning : The research presented in this thesis is focused on characterization of photophysical properties of lowest singlet excited states of carotenoids and their functions in the process of photosynthetic light harvesting. It is shown that the various light-harvesting complexes utilize different strategies to achieve efficient energy transfer from carotenoids to (bacterio)chlorophylls. LÄS MER
