1. Magnetic fields around massive protostars as traced by masers and dust emission
Sammanfattning : It is not fully clear how the magnetic field acts during the first stages of star formation. A possible way to clarify its role is to observe the polarized light coming from masers and thermal dust emission. LÄS MER
2. Spectral Properties of Type Ia Supernovae and Implications for Cosmology
Sammanfattning : Type Ia supernovae can, for a short period of time, reach the same brightness as an entire galaxy. They are responsible for the creation of a large fraction of all heavy elements and can be used, as standard candles, to prove that the expansion of the universe is accelerating. Yet, we do not fully understand them. LÄS MER
3. A Cosmic Quest for New Worlds. Characterising Exoplanet Signals via Radial Velocity and Transit Photometry
Sammanfattning : Since the first unambiguous detection of a planet around a Sun-like star, the interest in the new and exciting field of exoplanets has grown immensely. New and exciting developments are seen at a pace unparalleled for most subfields of astronomy. LÄS MER
4. Models of Cooperation, Learning and Catastrophic Risk
Sammanfattning : Our world presents us with dangers and opportunities. Some of these dangers and opportunities are easier to handle if two or more individuals learn to cooperate. This thesis contributes five papers about cooperation, learning and catastrophic risk. LÄS MER
5. Reading the Sky : From Starspots to Spotting Stars
Sammanfattning : This thesis encompasses two research fields in astronomy: astrometry and astronomy education and they are discussed in two parts. These parts represent two sides of a coin; astrometry, which is about constructing 3D representations of the Universe, and AER, where for this thesis, the goal is to investigate university students’ and lecturers’ disciplinary discernment vis-à-vis the structure of the Universe and extrapolating three-dimensionality.
