21. Island biogeography and population divergence in the Skyros wall lizard
Sammanfattning : Islands are cradles for new biodiversity and provide natural laboratories for the study of population divergence. In my thesis, I investigated the role of different evolutionary processes in the population divergence in the Skyros wall lizard (Podarcis gaigeae), a species where islet populations have strongly diverged morphologies. 22. Round goby invasion of the Baltic Sea : the role of phenotypic variation
Sammanfattning : Biological invasions are a major threat to biodiversity world wide with annual economic costs up to 1.4 trillion dollars. The round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) is a particularly fierce invader that threatens ecological function of the Baltic Sea. LÄS MER
23. A Drosophila Disease-Model for Transthyretin-associated Amyloidosis
Sammanfattning : Amyloidoses comprise a group of gain-of-toxic function protein misfolding diseases, in which normally soluble proteins in their functional state undergo conformational changes into highly organized and generally intractable thread-like aggregates, termed amyloid fibrils. These structures accumulate predominantly in the extracellular space but growing evidence suggests that amyloids may start to form intracellularly. LÄS MER
24. GENOME2QUNOME : Interfacing Molecules with Nanomaterials
Sammanfattning : The advent of technological furtherance in the biomedical sector and the renaissance of interdisciplinary science enable us to comprehend human lifestyle, and diseases at molecular and nanoscale levels. Lacking a shared theoretical foundation and terminological lexicon between various scientific domains might impede efforts to incorporate biological principles into nanoscience. LÄS MER
25. Too close for comfort : The role of Contact-Dependent growth Inhibition (CDI) in interbacterial competition and cooperation
Sammanfattning : Contact-Dependent growth inhibition (CDI) was discovered in 2005 in the E. coli isolate EC93. Since then our knowledge of CDI systems and their impact on bacterial communities have increased exponentially. LÄS MER
