6. An experimental study of mediators in allergic bronchoconstriction with focus on eicosanoids
Sammanfattning : Mast cells have a central role in the inflammatory response in airways of both atopic and non-atopic asthmatics. The mast cell-derived mediators such as histamine, leukotriene C4 and prostaglandin D2, released upon activation of the cell, produce acute bronchoconstriction that is characteristic of the early asthmatic response (EAR), and contribute to the development of airway inflammation and hyperresponsiveness following the initial reaction. 7. Medical interventions and gastric cancer risk : an observational approach
Sammanfattning : Helicobacter pylori infection is undoubtedly the most important risk factor for gastric cancer. A causal relationship with gastric cancer, however, has not been clearly established and the carcinogenic mechanism is still ambiguous. LÄS MER
8. Some lifestyle-related factors and risk of chronic renal failure : a population-based approach
Sammanfattning : Some renal diseases, i.e. rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis, are sufficient causes of a rapid, permanent total loss of renal function. However, the majority of renal diseases progress slowly over decades, initially often without symptoms, sometimes making it difficult to define the aetiologies. LÄS MER
9. Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs in Cyclooxygenases 1 and 2 : Binding modes and mechanisms from computational methods and free energy calculations
Sammanfattning : Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are one of the most commonly used classes of drugs. They target the cyclooxygenases (COX) 1 and 2 to reduce the physiological responses of pain, fever, and inflammation. Due to their role in inducing angiogenesis, COX proteins have also been identified as targets in cancer therapies. LÄS MER
10. Sorption and transformation of polar pharmaceuticals during wastewater treatment studied by hollow fiber liquid phase microextraction
Sammanfattning : This thesis addresses the application of hollow fiber liquid phase microextraction as a simple, efficient and environmentally friendly tool to study the fate of four common anti-inflammatory drugs (ketoprofen, naproxen, diclofenac and ibuprofen) during wastewater treatment. Initial experiments verified that this technique is applicable on aqueous as well as suspensions of solid samples, thus greatly simplifying the sample preparation. LÄS MER
