1. Regional pulmonary vasoreactivity, with special reference to nitric oxide, prostacyclin and body posture
Sammanfattning : The primary aim of the study was to investigate possible mechanisms behind the improved arterial oxygenation in ventilator-treated patients with acute lung injury (ALI) or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) when turned into prone position. A secondary aim was to discover new knowledge of possible importance for treatment of patients with oxygenation problems in intensive care and during anesthesia. LÄS MER
2. Nitric oxide in experimental sepsis
Sammanfattning : Nitric oxide (NO) is important in the control of blood pressure and organ perfusion. In septic shock, NO produced by inducible NO-synthase (NOS) has been claimed to mediate pathological vasodilation and cell injury, while NO produced by constitutive NOS may be protective in counteracting hypoperfusion and organ injury. 3. Islet constitutive nitric oxide synthase and nitric oxide production. Modulatory effects on insulin and glucagon secretion
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to elucidate the role of nitric oxide (NO) in the transduction signalling of insulin and glucagon release by stimulating or inhibiting islet endogenous NO-production as well as by using NO donors. Insulin release stimulated by L-arginine, the substrate for constitutive NO-synthase (cNOS)-catalyzed NO-production, was increased by the selective NOS-inhibitor NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) and suppressed by the intracellular NO donor hydroxylamine. 4. The influence of nitric oxide and cholecystokinin on tissue homeostasis in exocrine pancreas : an experimental study in rats
Sammanfattning : Growth of the pancreas is stimulated by cholecystokinin (CCK) in rats. Nitric oxide (NO), which is synthesized from the amino acid L-arginine by NO-synthases (NOS), interferes with CCK in modulating the pancreatic secretion. LÄS MER
5. Neurogenesis, neural stem cells and nitric oxide in neuroinflammation
Sammanfattning : We investigated whether nitric oxide (NO) is produced in MS patients, determining the concentrations of its oxidation products (NOx) in CSF. The total levels of NOx in CSF were significantly increased in all MS groups as compared to healthy controls and tension headache patients. LÄS MER
