  1. 11. Surviving the ratchet : Modelling deleterious mutations in asexual populations

    Författare :Jonas Söderberg; Otto Berg; Laurence Loewe; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Theoretical biology; Population genetics; Stochastic modelling; Genome evolution; Muller s Ratchet; Genetics; Genetik; Organism biology; Organismbiologi; Biology; Biologi; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär evolution; Biology with specialization in Molecular Evolution;

    Sammanfattning : One of the most unforgiving processes in nature is that of Muller's ratchet, a seemingly irreversible accumulation of deleterious mutations that all organisms have to deal with or face extinction. The most obvious way to avoid fitness collapse is recombination, though asexual populations usually do not have the luxury of recombining freely. LÄS MER

  2. 12. Patterns and Processes of Evolution in Sundaland

    Författare :Robert-Jan den Tex; Jennifer A. Leonard; Lawrence R. Heaney; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Biologi; Systematics and phylogenetics; Systematik och fylogeni; Genetics; Genetik; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Genetics; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär genetik;

    Sammanfattning : Biodiversity in the tropics is disproportionately high compared to other habitats, and also under disproportionate threat from human impact. It is necessary to understand how this diversity evolved and how it is partitioned across space in order to preserve it. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Early domestication? : Phenotypic alterations of Red Junglefowl selected for divergent fear of humans

    Författare :Beatrix Agnvall; Per Jensen; Hannah Rowland; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Domestication is the process through which animals adapt to conditions provided by humans. The domesticated phenotype differs from wild ancestors in a number of traits relating to physiology, morphology and behaviour. LÄS MER

  4. 14. Evolutionary Dynamics of Mutation and Gene Transfer in Bacteria

    Författare :Peter A Lind; Dan I Andersson; J. Arjan G. M. de Visser; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; fitness cost; bacterial evolution; gene amplification; mutational biases; GC content; synonymous substitutions; horizontal gene transfer; experimental evolution; Bacteriology; Bakteriologi; Microbiology; Mikrobiologi; Genetics; Genetik; Biology; Biologi; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Sammanfattning : The study of bacterial evolution is fundamental for addressing current problems of antibiotic resistance and emerging infectious diseases and lays a solid foundation for successful and rational design in biotechnology and synthetic biology. The main aim of this thesis is to test evolutionary hypotheses, largely based on theoretical considerations and sequence analysis, by designing scenarios in a laboratory setting to obtain experimental data. 5. 15. Studies of genes involved in regulating flowering time in Arabidopsis

    Författare :Maria Svensson; Högskolan i Skövde; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arabidopsis thaliana; flowering time; fold recognition; GA biosynthesis; promoter trapping; RNA-binding; T-DNA tagging; Biology; Biologi; Naturvetenskap; Natural sciences;

    Sammanfattning : Transition from a vegetative growth phase to flowering in plants occurs in response to both environmental conditions and endogenous signals. Identification of genes that are involved in regulating the time of flowering is of great importance in agri- and horticulture. LÄS MER
