  1. 6. Linking plant population dynamics to the local environment and forest succession

    Författare :Johan Petter Dahlgren; Johan Ehrlén; Ove Eriksson; Mark Rees; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Actaea spicata; Forest herbs; Forest succession; Integral projection model; Plant demography; Plant phenology; Population dynamics; Pre-dispersal seed predation; Seed mass; Soil potassium; Specific leaf area; Terrestrial ecology; Terrestisk ekologi; Plant Ecology; växtekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Linking environmental variation to population dynamics is necessary to understand and predict how the environment influences species abundances and distributions. I used demographic, environmental and trait data of forest herbs to study effects of spatial variation in environmental factors on populations as well as environmental change in terms of effects of forest succession on field layer plants. 2. 7. Interference competition between arctic and red foxes

    Författare :Bodil Elmhagen; Devra G Kleiman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Terrestrial ecology; Terrestisk ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I investigate the relationship between arctic foxes Alopex lagopus and red foxes Vulpes vulpes in Swedish mountain tundra habitat (fjällen). The arctic fox population was severely reduced by hunting in the early 20th century. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Cross-scale monitoring, landscape trajectories, and feedback in forest management : Examples from southern and middle boreal ecosystems in Sweden

    Författare :Sofia Eriksson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physical geography; Naturgeografi; Terrestrial ecology; Terrestisk ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : To manage for sustainability in a complex and changing world requires understanding of the coupled human-environmental system. The two case studies in this licentiate thesis are linked by what we can learn from past and current management in the form of feedback and how it can be incorporated into practical forest management within the boreal region. 4. 9. Pollination processes - maternal and offspring performance

    Författare :Kristina Holmén Bränn; Kari Lehtilä; Pia Mutikainen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Pollination; Sinapis arvensis; Brassica napus; Raphanus raphanistrum; Succisa pratensis; Evolution of flower size; Maternal plant responses; Resource allocation; Reproductive success; Terrestrial ecology; Terrestisk ekologi; Plant Ecology; växtekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Pollination is one of the most important factors determining the reproductive success of plants. This thesis examines processes associated to varying pollination, with focus on plant responses. The first aim was to examine the possibility and constraints for short-term evolution of flower size in Raphanus raphanistrum. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Forest edges in boreal landscapes - factors affecting edge influence

    Författare :Ulrika Jansson; Per-Anders Esseen; Mats Nilsson; Timo Kuuluvainen; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; aerial photographs; edge contrast; edge density; edge length; fetch size; forest fragmentation; lichen growth; line intersect sampling; pendulous lichen; photo interpretation; skogskant; flygbild; kantlängd; lav; Terrestrial ecology; Terrestisk ekologi; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany;

    Sammanfattning : The boreal forest in Fennoscandia has been subjected to major loss and fragmentation of natural forests due to intensive forestry. This has resulted in that forest edges are now abundant and important landscape features. Edges have documented effects on the structure, function and biodiversity in forests. LÄS MER
