16. Redox models in chemistry : A depiction of the conceptions held by secondary school students of redox reactions
Sammanfattning : According to previous research, students show difficulties in learning redox reactions. By the historical development different redox models exist to explain redox reactions, the oxygen model, the hydrogen model, the electron model and the oxidation number model. LÄS MER
17. Disarming bacteria : a structure-based approach to design an anti-virulence drug against Listeria monocytogenes
Sammanfattning : Antibiotic resistances are one of the biggest threats to global health and if we don’t change our behavior and way of using antibiotics we will end up in a ‘post-antibiotic era’, in which common infections and minor injuries can once kill again and up to 10 million deaths per year may occur by 2050. Therefore, there is a high need for new anti-bacterial drugs, especially of alternatives to existing antibiotics with already described resistances. LÄS MER
18. Biophysical chemistry of the ALS-associated protein SOD1 : Implications for folding, aggregation and in-cell behaviour
Sammanfattning : Biophysical chemistry deals with the structural behavior, properties and molecular function of biological macromolecules. A long-standing challenge is here to establish how these macromolecular features change upon transfer from simplified conditions in vitro to the crowded and molecularly complex environment of live cells. 19. Design of Glutathione Transferase Variants for Novel Activities with Alternative Substrates
Sammanfattning : Glutathione transferases (GSTs) play a pivotal role in cellular defense, since they are main contributors to the inactivation of genotoxic compounds of exogenous and endogenous origins. Directed evolution was used to improve the catalytic activities of Theta class GST T1-1 toward different substrates. LÄS MER
20. Prevention of hemolysis as a novel strategy to limit hemoglobin-mediated lipid oxidation in fish - towards a more sustainable use of fish raw materials
Sammanfattning : Hemoglobin (Hb) has been recognized as a main pro-oxidant in fish, causing fast and intense lipid oxidation. This thesis explores the hypothesis that maintaining red blood cells (RBCs) intact for an extended time during fish processing could delay Hb-mediated lipid oxidation. LÄS MER
