6. HIV-1 envelope protein gp120. Glycovirology of the V3 loop
Sammanfattning : The human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection usually is lethal as a consequence of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). HIV-1 is an enveloped virus and the trimeric envelope glycoprotein complex, gp120/gp41, is responsible for binding of the virus both to the primary cellular receptor CD4 and the coreceptors, CXCR4 and CCR5. 7. Multi-dimensional omics approaches to dissect natural immune control mechanisms associated with RNA virus infections
Sammanfattning : In recent decades, global health has been challenged by emerging and re-emerging viruses such as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2), human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV-1), and Crimean–Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV). Studies have shown dysregulations in the host metabolic processes against SARS-CoV2 and HIV-1 infections, and the research on CCHFV infection is still in the infant stage. LÄS MER
8. Elucidating Genetic and Biochemical Aspects of the P1 and Sda Carbohydrate Histo-Blood Group Antigens
Sammanfattning : Human histo-blood groups are inherited polymorphic variants that occur in the molecular structures on the humanred blood cell (RBC) surface. Introducing foreign RBCs into a recipient lacking an antigen may activate the humoraldefence leading to a hemolytic transfusion reaction. LÄS MER
9. Interactions between herpes simplex virus type 1 glycoprotein C and cell surface glycosaminoglycans
Sammanfattning : The cell surface glycosaminoglycan (GAG) heparan sulfate (HS) serves as an initial receptor for herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and virus attachment to the HS molecule is mediated by the envelope glycoprotein C (gC). In the first part of this thesis, we aimed to define the HS-binding domain of viral gC. LÄS MER
10. Role of GPIbαlpha Clustering and N-linked Carbohydrates in the Clearance of Refrigerated Platelets
Sammanfattning : The thesis focuses on understanding the mechanisms by which: 1) the macrophage alphaM-subunit recognizes betaN-acetylglucosamine (betaGlcNAc) residues on the von Willebrand factor receptor complex ((GPIbalpha,beta/IX)2V or vWfR) on refrigerated platelets and 2) refrigeration changes vWfR to elicit recognition through alphaMbeta2. Until recently, the only well-established mechanisms affecting platelet survival were antibody-mediated platelet clearance, consumption of platelets by coagulation reactions, and loss due to massive bleeding.
