1. Pathogen-host interactions at the surface of Streptococcus pyogenes
Sammanfattning : The bacterial surface can be thought of as the interface where pathogenic bacteria encounter the human host. Interactions between bacterial surface proteins and human proteins are important determinants of the eventual outcome of infection. LÄS MER
2. Usability Requirements for User-Controlled Robotic Eating Aids
Sammanfattning : The meal is fundamental in terms of nutrition but also from a social perspective. To be able to eat independently is described as important for the meal experience. The development of a robotic eating aid called Bestic and the evolvement of a list of usability criteria for such an aid are described in this thesis. LÄS MER
3. Amputation for vascular disease. Prognostic factors for healing, long-term outcome and costs
Sammanfattning : General characteristics and outcome was evaluated in 177 consecutive patients who underwent a major amputation in a defined population. Smoking and diabetes lowered the mean amputation age. Healing failure at six months was seen in 24% of transtibial and in 11% of transfemoral amputees. LÄS MER
4. Aspects of autoantibody epitopes in type 1 diabetes
Sammanfattning : Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is strongly associated with autoantibodies against insulin (IAA), glutamic acid decarboxylase 65 (GADA), insulinoma-associated protein 2 (IA-2A) and the most recently identified zinc T8 transporter (ZnT8A). Together or alone, they are important both to predict T1D and to classify diabetes at the time of clinical onset. LÄS MER
5. Apoptosis induced by a human milk protein complex. Cellular and structural studies in tumour cells and bacteria
Sammanfattning : Human milk contains a vast array of bioactive molecules, with nutritional and protective functions. This thesis describes the effects of a human milk protein complex, MAL, on tumour cells and bacteria. During our studies on the anti-adhesive properties of human milk we observed that a milk fraction killed tumour cells. LÄS MER
