6. Developmental regulation of smooth muscle contraction in the urinary bladder
Sammanfattning : Smooth muscle cells in the urinary bladder are involved in the control of urine filling and emptying. We have used mice to study the contractile regulation of urinary bladder smooth muscle during the fetal period. LÄS MER
7. Effects of ethanol on muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in nerve cells
Sammanfattning : This thesis focused on the mechanisms involved in the effects of long-term ethanol treatment on mAChRs and their coupled-signal transduction pathway in human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells. All 5 subtypes of mAChRs were expressed in these cells. LÄS MER
8. Cholinesterase inhibitors in Alzheimer's disease : an experimental study on mechanisms of interatcion with muscarinic and nicotinic receptors and neuroprotection
Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate the mechanisms beyond the interaction of cholinesterase inhibitors (ChEIs) with the cholinergic system in brain, with emphasis on their regulatory and mechanistic effects on subtypes of muscarinic and nicotinic receptors and neuroprotective properties. To investigate muscarinic receptor subtypes in frontal cortices of AD brains, the muscarinic antagonists pirenzepine, AF-DX 116, HHSiD, p-F-HHSiD and himbacine were used in receptor binding assays. 9. Neuronal nicotinic receptor subtypes in normal ageing, Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia : influences of neuropathological mechanisms as studied in human autopsy brain and transgenic mice
Sammanfattning : Neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are transmitter-gated ion channel receptors which are widely distributed in the brain. They mediate the effects of several neurotransmitters including ACh, DA, 5-HT and NA and are important for many normal physiological functions in the brain and are also implicated in a number of CNS disorders, such as AD, PD, schizophrenia, Tourette's syndrome and familial epilepsy. 10. Stem cell differentiation, plasticity and regenerative mechanisms in the cholinergic system : implications for Alzheimer’s disease
Sammanfattning : Stem cells are immature cells with self-renewal capacity. They are able to differentiate into multiple lineages that may serve as a source of expandable cells for various applications. LÄS MER
