1. Molecular Mechanisms of Reward and Aversion
Sammanfattning : Various molecular pathways in the brain shape our understanding of good and bad, as well as our motivation to seek and avoid such stimuli. This work evolves around how systemic inflammation causes aversion; and why general unpleasant states such as sickness, stress, pain and nausea are encoded by our brain as undesirable; and contrary to these questions, how drugs of abuse can subjugate the motivational neurocircuitry of the brain. 2. On the Autonomic Control of Blood Flow and Secretion in Salivary Glands. Functional and morphological aspects on muscarinic receptor subtypes in different species
Sammanfattning : Parasympathetic nervous activity is the principal stimulus for evoking fluid responses within salivary glands. Concomitantly to the onset of this response, the blood flow increases. LÄS MER
3. Modeling receptor induced signaling in MSNs : Interaction between molecules involved in striatal synaptic plasticity
Sammanfattning : Basal Ganglia are evolutionarily conserved brain nuclei involved in several physiologically important animal behaviors like motor control and reward learning. Striatum, which is the input nuclei of basal ganglia, integrates inputs from several neurons, like cortical and thalamic glutamatergic input and local GABAergic inputs. LÄS MER
4. Development of in vitro and ex vivo positron-emitting tracer techniques and their application to neurotrauma
Sammanfattning : The use of positron-emitting tracers has been extended beyond tomographic facilities in the last few years, giving rise to a general positron-emitting tracing technique. The methodological part of the present thesis involved the evaluation of the performance of storage phosphor (SP) plates, with tracers labeled with high-energy, short-lived, positron-emitting radionuclides, using homogenized tissue specimens and autoradiography with frozen brain sections. 5. Muscarinic M1 and M4 receptor subtypes in normal and pathological conditions in the central nervous system : studies on human and animal tissues using subtype selective ligands
Sammanfattning : Snake venoms from different mamba species contain toxins that bind to muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChR). The toxins MT-1 (selective for M1 after iodination), M1 toxin-1 (also known as MT7, selective for MI) and M4 toxin-1 (also known as MT3, selective for M4 receptors) were isolated and used to study M1 and M4 receptor subtypes in normal and pathological conditions.
