    Sammanfattning : Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a potentially curative treatment for multiple sclerosis (MS) with now more than 600 documented cases in the medical literature. Long-term remission can be achieved with this therapy, but when is it justified to claim that a patient is cured from MS? In attempt to answer this question, the outcome of the Swedish patients is described, mechanisms behind the therapeutic effect are discussed and new tools for demonstration of absence of disease have been developed. 2. 2. Diagnostic, prognostic and management aspects of different types of multiple sclerosis

    Författare :Petra Nilsson; Lund Neurologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; optic neuritis; multiple sclerosis; cerebrospinal fluid; magnetic resonance imaging; prognosis; cognition; diagnosis; primary progressive multiple sclerosis; tumefactive MS; craniectomy;

    Sammanfattning : Background: The aim in the thesis is to study diagnostic issues, clinical features, therapy, and prognosis in selected demyelinative disorders of the nervous system: optic neuritis (ON), primary progressive MS (PPMS), and tumefactive MS (a very rare acute demyelinating disorder). Methods: From an initial cohort of 110 patients with ON collected 19 to 31 years ago, a new follow-up survey was conducted in 50 patients who on a previous follow up had not developed MS. LÄS MER

    Sammanfattning : One out of several distinguishing features of multiple sclerosis (MS) is the epidemiological variation of geographic distribution. Population-based studies on the prevalence and incidence of MS in Sweden have previously been performed only in Göteborg. Another feature of MS is the clinical variation between individuals. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Quantitative MRI Biomarkers of Neurodegeneration in Multiple Sclerosis

    Sammanfattning : Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative disease that targets myelin in the brain and spinal cord. The corpus callosum connects the cerebral hemispheres and is composed of heavily myelinated axons. LÄS MER
