1. Antibiotic Resistance : Selection in the Presence of Metals and Antimicrobials
Sammanfattning : The external environment is complex: Antibiotics, metals and antimicrobials do not exist in isolation but in mixtures. Human activities such as animal husbandry, fertilization of agricultural fields and human medicine release high amounts these compounds into the environment. LÄS MER
2. Antibiotic resistance gone wild : A One Health perspective on carriage, selection and transmission of Extended-Spectrum Cephalosporinase- and Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae
Sammanfattning : Antibiotics have saved millions of lives since they came into clinical use during the Second World War in the 1940s. Today, our effective use of antibiotics is under great threat due to emerging antibiotic resistance in bacteria. This thesis addresses the problems of antibiotic resistance from a ”One Health” perspective. LÄS MER
3. Pharmacology and resistance mechanisms of nucleoside analogues and topoisomerase II interactive agents : studies on human leukemia cells with a focus on cross-resistance
Sammanfattning : The purpose of this thesis was to elucidate mechanisms of action and resistance of clinically relevant nucleoside analogues and topoisomerase interactive agents in human leukemia cell lines and leukernia cells isolated from peripheral blood of leukemia patients. Interactions and cross-resistance patterns of these different cytotoxic drug families were also studied since these drugs are usually administrated in combination in the clinic. LÄS MER
4. β-lactam combinations against multidrug-resistant Enterobacterales : Exploring combination effects and resistance development
Sammanfattning : The β-lactam antibiotics are a cornerstone in treating bacterial infections, but the increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistance worldwide threatens their effectiveness. The main driver of β-lactam resistance is the production of β-lactamases, which are bacterial enzymes that inactivate the antibiotic. LÄS MER
5. Experimental studies on multidrug resistance in human leukaemia : role of cellular heterogeneity for daunorubicin kinetics
Sammanfattning : Cellular resistance to chemotherapy is a major cause of treatment failure in acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) and still the majority of the patients die from their disease. Drug resistance 1s multifactorial, the most studied mechanism being multidrug resistance (MDR), mediated by the P-glycoprotein (Pgp). LÄS MER
