1. Spinal Cord Processing of Sensory Information: Spatial Organization and Adaptive Mechanisms
Sammanfattning : Principles for sensorimotor transformation and plasticity in the spinal cord and functional repair in the root-avulsed spinal cord were studied. A comparative study confirmed that the nociceptive withdrawal reflex (NWR) system is composed of reflex modules, with each performing a finely tuned transformation of skin sensory input to activity in one muscle. 2. Experimental studies of spinal mechanisms associated with muscle fatigue
Sammanfattning : Muscle fatigue is ubiquitous in every day life.Muscle fatigue might be considered as an altered state of motor behaviour, which impairs motor performance. By contrast, muscle fatigue could also be considered a positive phenomenon, which protects muscle tissue from damage that might be incurred to it by overuse. LÄS MER
3. Monoaminergic modulation in spinal reflex pathways from group I afferents
Sammanfattning : Serotonin and noradrenaline are known to play an important part in modulation of spinal neuronal networks. Group I muscle afferents mediate information on dynamic changes of muscle length and tension, and modulation of actions from these afferents could be of importance for the execution of movements. 4. On amino acid neurotransmitters in the spinal cord motor nuclei
Sammanfattning : Using pre- and post-embedding immunocytochemistry, the distribution of six amino acid neurotransmitter candidates, with special reference to y-amino-butyric acid (GABA), glycine and glutamate was examined in boutons apposing somata and dendrites in the lumbar motor nuclei of the cat spinal cord. The monosynaptic connection between muscle spindle I a afferents and motoneurons regarding content of neuroactive amino acid and complement of amino acid receptors in the postsynaptic membrane was studied in the rat. 5. Hypothalamic and cortical control of jaw reflexes
Sammanfattning : The subject of the thesis is a study of the projections from low threshold oral and face afferents to the cerebral cortex and of descending motor control mechanisms originating in the cerebral cortex or the hypothalamus and influencing the jaw reflexes.Cats anaesthetized with chi oral ose were used for the experiments.
