11. Computational Modelling of Ligand Complexes with G-Protein Coupled Receptors, Ion Channels and Enzymes
Sammanfattning : Accurate predictions of binding free energies from computer simulations are an invaluable resource for understanding biochemical processes and drug action. The primary aim of the work described in the thesis was to predict and understand ligand binding to several proteins of major pharmaceutical importance using computational methods. LÄS MER
12. Making Visible the Proximity Between Proteins
Sammanfattning : Genomic DNA is the template of life - the entity which is characterized by a self-sustaining anatomical development, regulated signaling processes, the ability to reproduce and to respond to stimuli. Through what is classically known as the central dogma, the genome is transcribed into mRNA, which in turn is translated into proteins. LÄS MER
13. Evolution of cellular complexity and other remarkable features in Gemmataceae : Complex bacterial lineages defy prokaryotic trends
Sammanfattning : Bacteria of the family Gemmataceae belong the phylum Planctomycetes and are remarkable because of their complex cellular architectures, previously considered to be traits exclusive to eukaryotes. This thesis provides clues to the atypical cell envelope, the enhanced radiotolerance and the amazing cellular complexity of these bacteria. LÄS MER
14. Protein Interaction Studies with Low Molecular Weight Ligands : Applications for Drug Discovery, Basic Research and Diagnostic Tool Design
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, the interactions between different proteins and small ligands were characterized by surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy (SPR) and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) based assays. For the C-reactive protein (CRP), a new type of artificial binder was identified which allows designing diagnostic assays superior to commonly used standard assays. LÄS MER
15. Transition metal oxide surfaces : Surface structures and molecular interaction
Sammanfattning : Metal oxides are both corrosion products and useful materials with a wide range of applications. Two of the most used metals today are iron and copper. In this thesis, surface structures and molecular interaction with surfaces of iron oxides and copper oxides are studied using spectroscopy and microscopy methods. LÄS MER
