  1. 21. Illumination in single cell optical microscopy studies - friend and foe

    Författare :Kristofer Bodvard; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; yeast; transcription factors; signalling; fluorescence microscopy; Saccharomyces cerevisiae; light-induced stress; phototoxicity; single cell imaging;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on how to use light as a biological stress factor in optical microscopy experiments and simultaneously use the illumination to image the spatial and temporal protein dynamics in single yeast cells. The stress responses to environmental changes other than light have been extensively investigated in budding yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, often using techniques based on population averages. 2. 22. Advanced Fluorescence Microscopy to Study Plasma Membrane Protein Dynamics

    Författare :Joachim Piguet; Horst Vogel; Ruud Hovius; Jerker Widengren; Antoine Triller; Switzerland Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL); []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; fluorescence; microscopy; plasma membrane; membrane proteins; membrane proteins diffusion; single-molecule imaging; single-molecule tracking; pentameric ligand-gated ion channels; nicotinic acetylcholine receptor; serotonin receptor; synapse; neuromuscular junction; post-synaptic scaffold; rapsyn; myopathies; fluorescent proteins; Förster resonance energy transfer; FRET imaging; protein-protein interactions; protein trafficking; photo-activatable proteins; Biological Physics; Biologisk fysik;

    Sammanfattning : Membrane protein dynamics is of great importance for living organisms. The precise localization of proteins composing a synapse on the membrane facing a nerve terminus is essential for proper functioning of the nervous system. In muscle fibers, the nicotinic acetylcholine is densely packed under the motor nerve termini. LÄS MER

  3. 23. Towards Classification and Functional Description of Enzymes: A case study of feruloyl esterases

    Författare :Gupta Udatha; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; descriptors; enzyme immobilization; catalytic triad; pharmacophore; enzyme promiscuity; functional classification; molecular docking; feruloyl esterases; protein evolution; structure-function relationship;

    Sammanfattning : The prediction of enzyme functionality from sequence or structure data remains a challenging task that can be best addressed by studying the structure-function relationships determined from previously available information. This thesis work was focused on developing a reliable classification and functional description for the feruloyl esterase (FAE) enzyme family, whose members’ possess both structural and catalytic promiscuity. 4. 24. How could Christmas trees remain evergreen? : photosynthetic acclimation of Scots pine and Norway spruce needles during winter

    Författare :Pushan Bag; Stefan Jansson; Fransis Andre Wollman; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Scots Pine; Norway spruce; Photosynthesis; Winter adaptation; biologisk kemi; biological chemistry; biology; biologi; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology; Physiological Botany; fysiologisk botanik;

    Sammanfattning : Plants and other green organisms harvest sunlight by green chlorophyll pigments and covertit to chemical energy (sugars) and oxygen in a process called photosynthesis providing the foundation for life on Earth. Although it is unanimously believed that oceanic phytoplanktons are the main contributors to the global photosynthesis, the contribution of coniferous boreal forests distributed across vast regions of the northern hemisphere cannot be undermined. 5. 25. Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Fluid Lipid Membranes

    Författare :Erik G. Brandt; Olle Edholm; Mats Wallin; Markus Deserno; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biological fluid dynamics; biomembranes; hydrodynamics; lipid bilayers; molecular dynamics; neutron spin echo;

    Sammanfattning : Lipid molecules form thin biological membranes that envelop all living cells, and behave as two-dimensional liquid sheets immersed in bulk water. The interactions of such biomembranes with their environment lay the foundation of a plethora of biological processes rooted in the mesoscopic domain - length scales of 1-1000 nm and time scales of 1-1000 ns.
