21. Illumination in single cell optical microscopy studies - friend and foe
Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on how to use light as a biological stress factor in optical microscopy experiments and simultaneously use the illumination to image the spatial and temporal protein dynamics in single yeast cells. The stress responses to environmental changes other than light have been extensively investigated in budding yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, often using techniques based on population averages. 22. Advanced Fluorescence Microscopy to Study Plasma Membrane Protein Dynamics
Sammanfattning : Membrane protein dynamics is of great importance for living organisms. The precise localization of proteins composing a synapse on the membrane facing a nerve terminus is essential for proper functioning of the nervous system. In muscle fibers, the nicotinic acetylcholine is densely packed under the motor nerve termini. LÄS MER
23. Towards Classification and Functional Description of Enzymes: A case study of feruloyl esterases
Sammanfattning : The prediction of enzyme functionality from sequence or structure data remains a challenging task that can be best addressed by studying the structure-function relationships determined from previously available information. This thesis work was focused on developing a reliable classification and functional description for the feruloyl esterase (FAE) enzyme family, whose members’ possess both structural and catalytic promiscuity. 24. How could Christmas trees remain evergreen? : photosynthetic acclimation of Scots pine and Norway spruce needles during winter
Sammanfattning : Plants and other green organisms harvest sunlight by green chlorophyll pigments and covertit to chemical energy (sugars) and oxygen in a process called photosynthesis providing the foundation for life on Earth. Although it is unanimously believed that oceanic phytoplanktons are the main contributors to the global photosynthesis, the contribution of coniferous boreal forests distributed across vast regions of the northern hemisphere cannot be undermined. 25. Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Fluid Lipid Membranes
Sammanfattning : Lipid molecules form thin biological membranes that envelop all living cells, and behave as two-dimensional liquid sheets immersed in bulk water. The interactions of such biomembranes with their environment lay the foundation of a plethora of biological processes rooted in the mesoscopic domain - length scales of 1-1000 nm and time scales of 1-1000 ns.
