6. Tailoring Cellulose Nanofibrils for Advanced Materials
Sammanfattning : Cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) are nanoscale fibers of high aspect ratio that can be isolated from a wide variety of cellulosic sources, including wood and bacterial cellulose. With high strength despite of their low density, CNFs are a promising renewable building block for the preparation of nanostructured materials and composites. LÄS MER
7. Swelling of Cellulose Fibrillar Matrices and Gels
Sammanfattning : One of the major challenges of today´s society is to find a sustainable way to create a living based on the resources on earth. It is a challenge that includes a transition from fossil-based materials to renewable/biodegradable raw materials and also the creation of an environmentally friendly circular material flow. LÄS MER
8. Processing and properties of thermoplastic composites containing cellulose nanocrystals or wood-based cellulose fibres
Sammanfattning : Cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) were surface modified with dialkylamines to increase the compatibility between the CNC and the polymeric matrix, and promising results were obtained, with a 300 % stiffness increase when the mixed dispersion was compression moulded on a laboratory scale. The manufacturing process was up-scaled using water-assisted mixing in a twin-screw extruder (TSE) followed by a second compounding step and injection moulding (IM). LÄS MER
9. Nanostructured Cellulose Biocomposites : Effects from dispersion, network and interface
Sammanfattning : The major load bearing component in native wood, cellulose nanofibrils, are potential candidates for use as reinforcement in polymer matrices. This study is based on nanocellulose composites and attempts to prepare and characterize biocomposites with high nanocellulose content and investigate the influence of nanostructure on macroscopic properties. 10. Modified and hybrid cellulose-based materials for water purification
Sammanfattning : The need for clean water has led to the development of several different water treatment methods as well as to a large number of organic, inorganic, hybrid and/or composite materials that are used in these methods. Cellulose, being a highly abundant biopolymer with meritorious properties, such as high mechanical strength, tunable surface chemistry, high aspect ratio and surface area, to mention a few, is exploited in the current thesis for water treatment applications.
