1. Molecular Regulation of Angiogenesis
Sammanfattning : Angiogenesis, de novo formation of blood vessels from the pre-existing vasculature, is crucial in embryo development, and in processes in the adult such as wound healing and ovulation. Angiogenesis is also involved in pathological conditions such as cancer and chronic inflammatory diseases, which are propagated by dysregulated, excess angiogenesis. LÄS MER
2. Fingerprints of light-induced molecular transients : from quantum chemical models of ultrafast x-ray spectroscopy
Sammanfattning : Absorption of sunlight generates renewable electricity and powers the growth of plants, but also causes severe damage both to synthetic materials and biological tissue. The wildly varying outcomes of these light-induced processes are ultimately determined by much slighter differences in their underlying reaction pathways, induced by the transient properties of short-lived and miniscule molecules; a powerful approach to their detection and characterization is offered by ultrafast x-ray spectroscopy, with identification of spectral fingerprints and further guidance from quantum chemical models. 4. Metal homeostasis as critical determinant for cellular fitness
Sammanfattning : Metals play a crucial role in cellular biology. Bulk and trace metals such as calcium and manganese regulate a plethora of cellular processes ranging from signaling and oxidative stress to proteostasis and energy metabolism. LÄS MER
5. Modelling Approaches to Molecular Systems Biology
Sammanfattning : Implementation and analysis of mathematical models can serve as a powerful tool in understanding how intracellular processes in bacteria affect the bacterial phenotype. In this thesis I have implemented and analysed models of a number of different parts of the bacterium E. coli in order to understand these types of connections. LÄS MER
