6. Foliated Transportation Networks - Evaluating feasibility and potential
Sammanfattning : Neither the critical role that transportation plays for economic activities nor its negative external effects can be denied. At the same time, the resources required to sustain and develop the transportation system to an adequate degree and at the required pace are limited. LÄS MER
7. Effects of silvicultural treatments in young Scots pine-dominated stands on the potential for early biofuel harvests
Sammanfattning : The overall objective of the work underlying this thesis was to increase knowledge regarding growth of young Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) - dominated mixed forests in northern Sweden and the potential for combining early biofuel harvest in such stands while leaving crop trees for future harvests. For this purpose, several studies were made. LÄS MER
8. Diversifying the utility and species composition of Nordic forage systems : new fractionation methods and novel legume species
Sammanfattning : Leys, a temporary grassland grown as part of a crop rotation, represent an essential component of agricultural production in the Nordic countries. This thesis explores methods to diversify the utility of feed produced from leys through fractionation, as well as increase the diversity of legume species within the stand. LÄS MER
9. Nutrient imbalance in Norway spruce
Sammanfattning : The studies presented in my thesis indicate that growing Norway spruce in monoculture does not constitute sustainable forest management in a high N and S deposition environment, such as in southern Sweden. The combination of N-induced high growth rates and leaching due to soil acidification causes soil reserves of nutrients to decrease. LÄS MER
10. Natural regeneration and management of birch
Sammanfattning : This thesis offers guidance for those who want to naturally establish, maintain and manage birch in monocultures and mixed stands. Silver and downy birch are the most common broadleaf tree species in northern Europe. In Sweden, the two species together make up approximately 12% of the standing forest volume. LÄS MER
