  1. 11. Diagnostic and therapeutic strategies following spinal cord and brachial plexus injuries

    Författare :Amar Karalija; Mikael Wiberg; Zhongyu John Li; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Spinal cord injury; brachial plexus injury; acetyl-L-carnitine; N-acetyl-cysteine; MRI; motoneurons; anatomi; Human Anatomy;

    Sammanfattning : Traumatic injuries to the spinal cord and brachial plexus induce a significant inflammatory response in the nervous tissue with progressive degeneration of neurons and glial cells, and cause considerable physical and mental suffering in affected patients. This thesis investigates the effects of the antioxidants N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) and acetyl-L- carnitine (ALC) on the survival of motoneurons in the brainstem and spinal cord, the expression of pro-apoptotic and pro-inflammatory cell markers, axonal sprouting and glial cell reactions after spinal hemisection in adult rats. 2. 12. Transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells and injections of microRNA as therapeutics for nervous system repair

    Författare :Mallappa K. Kolar; Lev N. Novikov; Paul J. Kingham; Mikael Wiberg; Elisabet Åkesson; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; spinal cord injury; peripheral nerve injury; mesenchymal stem cells; regeneration; neurotrophic factor; angiogenic factor;

    Sammanfattning : Traumatic injuries to the spinal cord (SCI) and peripheral nerve (PNI) affect several thousand people worldwide every year. At present, there is no effective treatment for SCI and despite continuous improvements in microsurgical reconstructive techniques for PNI, many patients are still left with permanent, devastating neurological dysfunction. 3. 13. Exploring the multiple dimensions of context: Implications for the design and development of innovative technology-enhanced learning environments

    Författare :Arianit Kurti; Marcelo Milrad; Per Flensburg; Mikael Wiberg; Växjö universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; technology-enhanced learning; context; context model; contextual metadata; Computer science; Datavetenskap; Media Technology; Media Technology;

    Sammanfattning : Technology evolution throughout history has initiated many changes in different aspects of human activities. Learning, as one of the most representative human activities has also been subject to these changes. Nowadays, the use of information and communication technologies has considerably changed the way people learn and collaborate. LÄS MER

  4. 14. Schwann cells and mesenchymal stem cells as promoter of peripheral nerve regeneration

    Författare :Maria Cristina Mantovani; Mikael Wiberg; Giorgio Terenghi; Susan Shawcross; Lev Novikov; Liudmila Novikova; John W Haycock; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; peripheral nerve regeneration; Schwann cell; adult stem cell; myelin; senescence;

    Sammanfattning : The transplantation of primary Schwann cells (SC) has been shown to improve nerve regeneration. However, to monitor the survival of transplanted cells within the host, a stable labelling method is required. LÄS MER

  5. 15. Sensory neuronal protection & improving regeneration after peripheral nerve injury

    Författare :Andrew McKay Hart; Mikael Wiberg; Angus McGrouther; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurosciences; cell death; TUNEL; optical disection; dorsal root ganglion; peripheral nerve; nerve conduit; Schwann cell; glial growth factor; leukaemia inhibitory factor; acetyl-L-carnitine; N-acetyl-cysteine; Neurovetenskap; Neurology; Neurologi; neurokirurgi; Neurosurgery;

    Sammanfattning : Peripheral nerve trauma is a common cause of considerable functional morbidity, and healthcare expenditure. Particularly in the ~15% of injuries unsuitable for primary repair, standard clinical management results in inadequate sensory restitution in the majority of cases, despite the rigorous application of complex microsurgical techniques.
