  1. 1. The role of microglia in Alzheimer's disease - Investigating mechansims regulating amyloid-β clearance

    Författare :Carl-Henrik Andersson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; microglia; neuroinflammation; amyloid-beta; Alzheimer s disease; genetic association; biomarker; cerebrospinal fluid; zebrafish; clearance; in vivo imaging;

    Sammanfattning : Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia today. The disease is characterized by the presence of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the brain, accompanied by a progressive neurodegeneration leading to memory loss. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Altered cell signaling linked to neurodegeneration : Studies on scrapie-infected neuroblastoma cells and activated microglia

    Författare :Christina Svensson; Tiit Land; Gianluigi Forloni; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Prion disease; Inflammation; MAPK; Microglia activation; Neuroblastoma; Neurochemistry; Neurokemi; Neurochemistry and Neurotoxicology; neurokemi och neurotoxikologi;

    Sammanfattning : Prion diseases are neurodegenerative disorders that can affect humans and animals. The underlying event is a conformational change of the normal cellular prion protein (PrPC) into an aberrant isoform termed PrP-scrapie (PrPSc). PrPSc is thought to lead to neurodegeneration and activation of glial cells. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Deciphering microglia plasticity in glioma

    Författare :Dalel Saidi; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Microglia are the innate immune cells of the brain. One of the main characteristics of microglia is its extremely plasticity, which is necessary for them to deal with changing circumstances. Activation of microglia can contribute to contrasting effects by either proinflammatory, anti-inflammatory, or tumor-supportive phenotypes. LÄS MER

  4. 4. WNT signaling in microglia : WNTs as novel regulators of microglia

    Författare :Carina Halleskog; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Microglia, the immunocompetent cells of the central nervous system (CNS) and the brain’s own macrophages are the most motile cells in the CNS and those with highest plasticity, as they rapidly move their projections to actively screen their environment for any type of injury. Upon cell damage or infection, microglia respond quickly: they proliferate, change morphology from ramified to amoeboid state to migrate or invade towards the injury, secrete many types of cytokines and chemokines to communicate with other inflammatory cells, and phagocytose cell debris. 5. 5. On the stimulatory effect of microglial cells on angiogenesis

    Författare :Simin Rymo; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :microglia; angiogenesis; aortic ring;

    Sammanfattning : ABSTRACT Angiogenesis, the process by which new vessels sprout from pre-existing vessels, is fundamental to development, tissue growth and repair. The main aim of this thesis was to investigate the role of microglia on angiogenesis. We adapted the rat ex vivo/in vitro aortic ring model to the mouse in a 3-D culture system. LÄS MER
