11. Distribution and fate of polychlorinated biphenyls within the pelagic microbial food web
Sammanfattning : The composition and production of the plankton community in aquatic environments will in turn influence the food-web structure of larger predators, nutrient cycling, the sinking flux and, hence, the fate of hydrophobic organic contaminants. The aim of the research presented here was to study the distribution and fate of PCBs within the microbial food web, including bacteria, flagellates, ciliates, and phytoplankton. LÄS MER
12. Factors controlling pelagic communities of freshwater ciliates and heliozoans
Sammanfattning : Ciliate diversity and seasonal succession were studied during two years in oligotrophic, acidic Lake Njupfatet. Maximum ciliate abundance occurred shortly after ice-out. After thefirst year, the lake was neutralised by liming. Liming caused changes in the bacterioplanktonand phytoplankton communities, but no change in ciliate diversity. LÄS MER
13. Response of marine food webs to climate-induced changes in temperature and inflow of allochthonous organic matter
Sammanfattning : Global records of temperature show a warming trend both in the atmosphere and in the oceans. Current climate change scenarios indicate that global temperature will continue to increase in the future. The effects will however be very different in different geographic regions. LÄS MER
14. The importance of terrestrial carbon in plankton food webs
Sammanfattning : Allochthonous substances, i.e. produced in terrestrial ecosystems, are known to fuel bacterial production in humic lakes. I observed that allochthonous carbon subsidizes bacteria even at high levels of phytoplankton biomass. LÄS MER
15. Diversity of soil microbial communities: In the perspective of targeting functional genes
Sammanfattning : Abstract Intensive land use in agriculture can lead to higher loss of biodiversity in soils and subsequently carbon due to tillage and application of pesticides and fertilizers. The microbial communities are pivotal to ecosystem processes in soil such as nutrient cycling, soil formation and plant productivity and thus are affected by land use. LÄS MER
