1. Controlled manipulation of microparticles utilizing magnetic and dielectrophoretic forces
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents some experimental work in the area of manipulation of microparticles. Manipulation of both magnetic and non magnetic beads as well as microorganisms are addressed. The work on magnetic bead manipulation is focused on controlled transport and release, on a micrometer level, of proteins bound to the bead surface. LÄS MER
2. Functional characteristics of periodontitis and peri-implantitis lesions in humans
Sammanfattning : In the current series of studies functional characteristics of periodontitis and peri-implantitis lesions in humans were investigated. Cell markers for antimicrobial activity were used to evaluate differences between periodontitis and peri-implantitis lesions (Study I), while epigenetic and oxidative stress markers were used to compare periodontitis lesions in smokers and non-smokers (Study II). 3. A study of micro-particles in the dust and melt at different stages of iron and steelmaking
Sammanfattning : The dust particles generated due to mechanical wear of iron ore pellets and clusters formed in molten stainless steel alloyed with rare earth metals (REM) are considered in this study. Firstly, the influence of the characteristics of iron ore pellets, applied load on a pellet bed and partial reduction of the pellets on the size distribution of the generated dust was investigated. 4. New Concepts for Dielectrophoretic Separations and Dielectric Measurements of Bioparticles
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents two new concepts for separation of micro particles using dielectrophoresis, demonstrated by calculated examples, as well as a new method for obtaining dielectric data on living cells. The thesis is based on four papers. LÄS MER
5. Superporous agarose a new material for chromatography
Sammanfattning : Agarose, the most commonly employed chromatography base material in industrial purification processes for biomolecules – proteins, has almost ideal properties. The major disadvantage of the agarose support is its poor mechanical strength which excludes its use in high speed separations where small particles are needed in order to achieve improved chromatographic efficiency.
