1. Postcolonial Nature Conservation and Collaboration in Urban Protected Areas : Everyday relations at Macassar Dunes/Wolfgat reserves, Cape Town, South Africa
Sammanfattning : Protected areas and nature conservation are profoundly shaped by Western ideas, and are embedded within powerful discourses and colonising practices. This thesis examines how colonialism and apartheid shape contemporary practices of nature conservation in Cape Town in South Africa - its institutions, geographies and peoples. LÄS MER
2. Endocranial Morphology and Phylogeny of Palaeozoic Gnathostomes (Jawed Vertebrates)
Sammanfattning : Gnathostomes, or jawed vertebrates, make up the overwhelming majority of modern vertebrate diversity. Among living vertebrates, they comprise the chondrichthyans (“cartilaginous fishes” such as sharks, skates, rays, chimaeras) and the osteichthyans (“bony fishes” or bony vertebrates, inclusive of tetrapods). 3. Coral Reef Habitats and Fish Connectivity : Implications for coastal management and fishery
Sammanfattning : Coral reefs have one of the highest levels of biodiversity of all ecosystems in the world and are important for both human livelihood and food security throughout many tropical countries. However, due to increased anthropogenic pressure on marine ecosystems, especially during the last couple of decades, coral reefs have become critically over-fished, and many reefs are now in a degraded state and are facing additional future threats due to further over-exploitation, chemical pollution, sedimentation, and effects of climate change. 4. The Art of Discretion : Essays on Earnings Management, Governance, and Capital Structure
Sammanfattning : This dissertation is a compilation of three articles on earnings management, governance and capital structure. In addition to these three articles, the introductory chapter establishes the link between these articles and summarizes them.Article I investigates the joint effect of governance mechanisms on earnings management. 5. Simulation of individual cells in flow
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, simulations are performed to study the motion ofindividual cells in flow, focusing on the hydrodynamics of actively swimming cells likethe self-propelling microorganisms, and of passively advected objects like the red bloodcells. In particular, we develop numerical tools to address the locomotion ofmicroswimmers in viscoelastic fluids and complex geometries, as well as the motion ofdeformable capsules in micro-fluidic flows.
