  1. 1. Islet hormonal hypersecretion and metformin’s effect on islet hormonal secretion studied in vitro and in vivo

    Författare :Quan Wen; Anders Forslund; Hannes Manell; Hjalti Kristinsson; Lisa Juntti-Berggren; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; alpha cell; carboxypeptidase E; childhood obesity; DRP-1; free fatty acids; glucagon secretion; glucose metabolism; glucose stimulated insulin secretion; human islets; hyperinsulinemia; metformin; mitochondrial fission; oral glucose tolerance test OGTT ; prohormone convertase; proinsulin; proinsulin to insulin ratio PI:I ;

    Sammanfattning : Childhood obesity has surged globally. Elevated levels of free fatty acids contribute to hyperinsulinemia, hyperproinsulinemia, and hyperglucagonemia connected with both obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Metformin has beneficial effects on islets by influencing metabolism and reducing stress-induced cell death. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Body Composition in Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes : Aspects of Glycaemic Control and Insulin Sensitivity

    Författare :Stefan Särnblad; Jan Åman; Torsten Tuvemo; Jan Bolinder; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pediatrics; Type 1 diabetes mellitus; Adolescent; Body composition; Physical activity; Energy intake; Metformin; Insulin sensitivity; Pediatrik; Paediatric medicine; Pediatrisk medicin;

    Sammanfattning : Excessive weight gain has frequently been reported in adolescents with type 1 diabetes, especially in girls. In general, puberty is associated with reduced insulin sensitivity that is further diminished by overweight. The causes and consequences of excessive weight gain in adolescents with type 1 diabetes are not fully understood. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Free fatty acids and insulin hypersecretion studied in human islets

    Författare :Jing Cen; Peter Bergsten; Miriam Cnop; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; free fatty acids; palmitate; human islets; EndoC-βH1 cells; metformin; sorcin; insulin secretion; mitochondrial respiration; ER stress; human transcriptome array; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Free fatty acid (FFA) levels are increased in many obese subjects. High FFA levels stimulate the pancreatic beta-cells but have negative long-term effects. In obese children with high FFA levels circulating insulin concentration is high early in life but decline with age precipitating the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). LÄS MER

  4. 4. Diabetes, metformin and gastric adenocarcinoma

    Författare :Jiaojiao Zheng; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Diabetes may increase the risk and mortality of certain cancers, but its association with gastric adenocarcinoma is not clear. On the other hand, metformin, a first-line treatment for diabetes, may reduce cancer risks and improve cancer-related survival, but these associations have not been confirmed in gastric adenocarcinoma as well. 5. 5. Pharmacoepidemiologic Studies of Diabetes Mellitus - with special reference to - Glucose Control and Prognosis of Type 2 Diabetes

    Författare :Jonny Olsson; Samhällsmedicin; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; diabetology; secreting systems; Endocrinology; cohort study; longitudinal study; cross-sectional study; mortality; diabetes mellitus; Pharmacoepidemiology; prevalence; type 2 diabetes; diabetes costs; short-term sick-leave; premature retirement; production losses; inpatient care; glycaemic control; fasting blood glucose; oral antihyperglycaemic agents; sulphonylurea; metformin; insulin; combination treatment; drug utilization; prescribed daily doses; safety; effectiveness; Endokrinologi; sekretion; diabetologi;

    Sammanfattning : The efficacy and safety of antihyperglycaemic drugs have been evaluated in one American and one British randomized clinical trial, which have given contradictory results. The positive results of the latter may be more convincing as it included a greater number of patients and as its duration was longer. LÄS MER
