  1. 1. Structure and function of microbial communities in acid sulfate soil and the terrestrial deep biosphere

    Författare :Xiaofen Wu; Mark Dopson; Ricardo Amils; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; molecular phylogeny; acid sulfate soils; metal; acidophiles; deep biosphere; oligotrophy; biofilm formation; metagenome; binning; metabolism; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis describes the use of different DNA sequencing technologies to investigate the structure and function of microbial communities in two extreme environments, boreal acid sulfate soil and the terrestrial deep biosphere.The first of the two investigated environments was soils containing un-oxidized metal sulfides that are termed ‘potential acid sulfate soil’ (PASS) materials. 2. 2. Microbial Metagenomics : A Tale of the Dead and the Living

    Författare :Katarzyna Zaremba-Niedźwiedzka; Siv G.E. Andersson; Jeroen Raes; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; single-cell genomics; single cell; fossil metagenome; freshwater metagenome; LD12;

    Sammanfattning : It is a microbial world we live in: microbes outnumber other organisms by several orders of magnitude, and they have great importance for the environment. However, environmental microbes are notoriously difficult to grow in the laboratory, and using culture independent techniques is necessary to expand our view. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Exploring the metagenome of the Baltic Sea sediment

    Författare :Fredrik Hårdeman; Sara Sjöling; Gunnar Sandström; Kornelia Smalla; Södertörns högskola; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Maringeologi; Bakterier;

    Sammanfattning : Environmental microorganisms are fundamental to ecosystem function, acting as drivers in processes such as primary production, organic matter remineralisation, pollution remediation and global biogeochemical cycling. However, the study of the bacterial communities requires the application of advanced culture-independent methods considering that only a small fraction of the community is otherwise accessed. 4. 4. Travel – a risk factor for disease and spread of antibiotic resistance

    Författare :Martin Angelin; Helena Palmgren; Birgitta Evengård; Anders Johansson; Anu Kantele; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Accident Prevention; Alcohol Drinking; Anti-Bacterial Agents; Antimalarials; Beta-Lactamases; Drug-Resistance; Bacterial; Enterobacteriaceae; Health Knowledge; Attitudes; Practice; High-Throughput Nucleotide Sequencing; Medication Adherence; Metagenome; Metagenomics; Patient Compliance; Proteobacteria; Risk Reduction Behaviour; Risk-Taking; Safe Sex; Travel medicine; Travel; Vaccination; Infectious Diseases; infektionssjukdomar; mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Sammanfattning : As international travel is rapidly increasing, more people are being exposed to potentially more antibiotic resistant bacteria, a changed infectious disease epidemiology, and an increased risk of accidents and crime. Research-based advice is needed to adequately inform travellers about these risks. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Mitochondrial and Eukaryotic Origins : A Phylogenetic Perspective

    Författare :Björn Brindefalk; Siv Andersson; James McInerney; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular evolution; Phylogenetics; Mitochondrial origin and Evolution; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Sammanfattning : Mitochondria are eukaryotic cellular organelles responsible for power-generation, believed to have come into existence by an endo-symbiontic event where a bacterial cell was incorporated by an un-specified "proto-eukaryote". Phylogenetic analysis have shown that the mitochondrial ancestor was most related to present-day alpha-proteobacteria, although the exact nature of the mitochondrial progenitor remains disputed.
