1. Biological Pretreatment and Dry Digestion Processes for Biogas Production
Sammanfattning : Biogas technology has been used quite extensively to generate renewable energy from organic wastes while also recycling nutrients in the wastes and reducing harmful emissions. However, the challenges of low biogas yield from recalcitrant and inhibitory solid wastes together with high construction and operation costs of bioreactors have impeded optimal performance through this process. 2. Enhanced biogas production from municipal WWTPs : Co-digestion of microalgae with sewage sludge and thermophilic secondary digestion of mesophilic digested sludge
Sammanfattning : Biogas is produced when organic material is broken down in oxygen-free (anaerobic) conditions. This process is called anaerobic digestion and is used in most large and medium-sized municipal wastewater treatment plants in Sweden. LÄS MER
3. Biogas production through the syntrophic acetate-oxidising pathway : characterisation and detection of syntrophic acetate-oxidising bacteria
Sammanfattning : Biogas produced from wastes, residues and energy crops has promising potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to secure future energy supply. Methane is the energy-rich component of biogas, and is formed as the end product during degradation of organic material without oxygen (anaerobic). LÄS MER
4. Structure determination, thermal stability and catalytic mechanism of hyperthermostable isocitrate dehydrogenases
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, studies on the enzyme isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) from the hyperthermophiles Aeropyrum pernix (ApIDH), Thermotoga maritima (TmIDH), Archaeoglobus fulgidus (AfIDH) and Pyrococcus furiosus (PfIDH) are presented. The aim of the described work was to contribute to the understanding of protein thermostability and to study the catalytic mechanism. LÄS MER
5. Increase of Biogas Production at Wastewater Treatment Plants Addition of urban organic waste and pre-treatment of sludge
Sammanfattning : Anaerobic digestion of organic matter results in the production of biogas, which can be used to replace fossil fuels. There is potential for increased biogas production at wastewater treatment plants by digesting urban organic waste either separately or together with the sludge. Biogas production could also be increased by sludge pre-treatment. LÄS MER
