11. Signaling for color change in melanophores : and a biosensor application
Sammanfattning : Melanophores are dark brown pigment cells located in the skin of fish, amphibia, reptiles, and many invertebrates. The color of the animal can change via rearrangement of pigment granules, melanosomes, in the cells. The dark melanophores can either hide colorful cells so that the animal appears dark, or let through colors from underneath. LÄS MER
12. Secretory and anti-inflammatory actions of some gastro-intestinal hormones in salivary glands
Sammanfattning : Textbooks generally state that the secretory activity of salivary glands is solely regulated by nerves. This view is challenged in the present Thesis, using the parotid gland of the anaesthetized rat as experimental in vivo model. LÄS MER
13. Pathophysiology of intrauterine asphyxia
Sammanfattning : Background: The premature infant is at increased risk of cerebral white matter damage, oftenreferred to as periventricular leucomalacia, PVL, which is associated with later developmentof cerebral palsy and cognitive impairment. The etiology of PVL remains unclear, but ischemia-reperfusion followed by generation of free radicals and intrauterine infections havebeen suggested to play an important role. LÄS MER
14. Genetic studies of autism and autistic-like traits
Sammanfattning : Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by impairment in social interaction, language impairment and repetitive behavior with varying degrees of severity. ASD represents the lower end on a continuously distributed measure of autistic-like traits (ALTs). LÄS MER
15. Inflammation and neuroprotective strategies in the immature brain after hypoxic-ischemic brain injury
Sammanfattning : Perinatal brain injury, as a result of hypoxia-ischemia (HI) or infection/HI, is a major cause of acute mortality and neurological morbidity in infants and children. The mechanisms of perinatal HI are not fully understood, which makes it difficult to find effective treatment. LÄS MER
