  1. 1. Melatonin in the gastrointestinal tract

    Författare :Fanny Söderquist; Janet Cunningham; Annica Jacobson; Bodil Ohlsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; melatonin; MT1; MT2; gastointestinal tract; small intestinal neuroendocrine tumours; IBS; depression; anxiety; personality and affective disorder; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science; Psychiatry; Psykiatri;

    Sammanfattning : Melatonin is recognised as the pineal hormone regulating sleep and circadian rhythm. It has also been identified in peripheral tissues (mainly in animals) and thought to display a variety of actions, including anti-inflammatory properties, regulation of gastrointestinal (GI) functions, glucose homeostasis and beneficial effects in different tumour types. 2. 2. Exploring Links between Melatonin, Inflammation and Depression

    Författare :Isak Sundberg; Janet Cunningham; Lisa Ekselius; Daniel Lindqvist; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; melatonin; inflammation; depression; biomarkers; cytokines; anxiety; hepatitis C; Psychiatry; Psykiatri;

    Sammanfattning : Major depressive disorder (MDD) is one of the leading global causes of disease burden. Worse yet, about one third of the patients with MDD do not experience a remission with current treatments. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Experimental Disruption of Intestinal Mucosal Homeostasis : Exploring the Protective Potential of Melatonin and Misoprostol

    Författare :Karsten Peters; Markus Sjöblom; Hans Lennernäs; David Dahlgren; Åsa Keita; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Intestinal barrier dysfunction; intestinal permeability; chemotherapy-induced mucositis; doxorubicin; 5-fluorouracil; apoptosis; proliferation; melatonin; misoprostol; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Sammanfattning : The intestinal mucosa serves as a protective layer that separates the intestinal contents from the underlying tissues. It restricts harmful substances, pathogens, and undigested particles from entering the bloodstream. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Development and Validation of Bioanalytical Methods : Application to Melatonin and Selected Anti-Infective Drugs

    Författare :Susanne Römsing; Yngve Bergqvist; Åsa Emmer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; african trypanosomiasis; melatonin; malaria; antiretroviral drugs; lumefantrine; tafenoquine; lamivudine; nevirapine; zidovudine; sampling paper; dried blood spots; capillary blood; antimalarial drugs; solid-phase extraction; liquid chromatography; Chemistry; Kemi; Analytical Chemistry; Analytisk kemi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis describes bioanalytical methods for measuring melatonin and some anti-infective drugs in biological fluids. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) or protein precipitation was used for enrichment and purification of the analytes and Liquid Chromatography (LC) was used to analyze the samples. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Dietary L-Tryptophan Suppresses Aggression and Stress Responsiveness in Juvenile Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) : The Role of Brain Serotonin and Plasma Melatonin

    Författare :Olivier Lepage; Svante Winberg; József Haller; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; serotonin; brain; fish; rainbow trout; Oncorhynchus mykiss; feed; stress; cortisol; melatonin; behaviour; aggression; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Sammanfattning : Juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fed L-tryptophan (TRP) supplemented feed for 7 days show a suppression of aggressive behaviour along with a reduction in post-stress plasma cortisol levels. However, 3 days of elevated dietary TRP does not have any effects on either aggressive behaviour or post-stress plasma cortisol levels. LÄS MER
