11. Methods for the analysis and characterization of brain morphology from MRI images
Sammanfattning : Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an imaging modality that produces detailed images of the brain without using any ionizing radiation. From a structural MRI scan, it is possible to extract morphological properties of different brain regions, such as their volume and shape. LÄS MER
12. Characterization and Energy Calibration of a Silicon-Strip Detector for Photon-Counting Spectral Computed Tomography
Sammanfattning : Multibin photon-counting x-ray detectors are promising candidates to be applied in next generation computed tomography (CT), whereby energy information from a broad x-ray spectrum can be extracted and properly used for improving image quality and correspondingly reducing radiation dose. A silicon-strip detector has been developed for spectral CT, which operates in photon-counting mode and allows pulse-height discrimination with 8 adjustable energy bins. LÄS MER
13. Ultrasonic Methods for Quantitative Carotid Plaque Characterization
Sammanfattning : Cardiovascular diseases are the leading causes of death worldwide and improved diagnostic methods are needed for early intervention and to select the most suitable treatment for patients. Currently, carotid artery plaque vulnerability is typically determined by visually assessing ultrasound B-mode images, which is influenced by user-subjectivity. LÄS MER
14. Evolution of protein and non-coding RNA genes studied with comparative genomics
Sammanfattning : The identification of protein and non-coding RNA (ncRNA) genes is one important step in the analysis of a genome. This thesis focuses on the identification and analysis of proteins and ncRNAs homologues by exploiting a variety of computational methods in order to reach conclusions as to their structure, function, evolution and regulation. 15. New ultrasonographic approaches to monitoring cardiac and vascular function
Sammanfattning : Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. To decrease mortality and morbidity in cardiovascular disease, the development of accurate, non-invasive methods for early diagnosis of atherosclerotic cardiac and vascular engagement is of considerable clinical interest.
