16. Development of a robust and rapid microfluidics-based antibiotic susceptibility test : From prototype to clinical implementation
Sammanfattning : Even though bacteria normally are rapidly cleared from the blood by the immune system, a blood stream infection may arise, in turn possibly leading to sepsis and septic shock. Sepsis is a life-threatening condition, where the inflammatory response to infection targets tissues and organs. LÄS MER
17. Microarray Technology for Genotyping in Pharmacogenetics
Sammanfattning : The studies in this thesis describe the development of a microarray based minisequencing system and its application to highly parallel genotyping of single nucleotide polymorphisms. The technical developments included identification of a three-dimensional microarray surface coating with high binding capacity for oligonucleotides modified with amino groups as the most optimal one for the system. 18. Extracellular Matrix Based Materials for Tissue Engineering
Sammanfattning : The extracellular matrix is (ECM) is a network of large, structural proteins and polysaccharides, important for cellular behavior, tissue development and maintenance. Present thesis describes work exploring ECM as scaffolds for tissue engineering by manipulating cells cultured in vitro or by influencing ECM expression in vivo. LÄS MER
19. The interplay between Giardia intestinalis and host intestinal epithelial cells : A tale of immune activation and suppression
Sammanfattning : Giardia intestinalis is a non-invasive, protozoan parasite causing the diarrheal disease giardiasis in a variety of mammals, including humans. The parasite has two main life cycle stages; disease-causing trophozoites and infectious cysts. Trophozoites colonize the host’s upper small intestine by attaching to intestinal epithelial cells (IECs). G. LÄS MER
20. Microfluidic Compartmentalization for Smart Materials, Medical Diagnostics and Cell Therapy
Sammanfattning : The organisation of fluids in small compartments is ubiquitous in nature, such as in the cellular composition of all life. This work explores several engineering avenues where microscale fluid compartmentalization can bring novel material properties or novel functionality in life sciences or medicine. LÄS MER
